Ayurvedic Defense Against the MRSA Superbug
Just the other day, a 17-year-old boy was brought into my office. He had a swollen chin. I looked into it and recommended that the father take the boy to the family doctor for antibiotics.
Well, the next day dad came back. The boy was diagnosed with MRSA (aka antibiotic-resistant Superbug). Dad wanted to know what Ayurvedic treatments I could offer.
As you know, MRSA (pronounced Mursa in the states) has evolved, mutated and adapted its DNA to be highly resistant to conventional treatments. It can survive a full dose of beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillin, methicillin and cephalosporins, according to Medical Microbiology.
How MRSA probably originated…
The virus was discovered in 1961 in the UK, two years after we started using the antibiotic methicillin to treat S. aureus and other infectious bacteria. That’s how it got its name, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
Since then, this superbug has been running rampant. MRSA infections in the United States reached 127,000 in 1999 (according to a 2007 report published in Emerging Infectious Diseases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). And this only counts infections treated in hospitals. Of these 127,000 infections, 11,000 people died.
These figures suggest that MRSA causes more deaths than AIDS
By 2005, MRSA was associated with 18,650 hospital-related deaths, estimated the October 17, 2007, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Almost all of these Deaths were caused by people with weakened immune systems.
MRSA was once labeled as a hospital-acquired (HA-MRSA) infection only. Now, however, it occurs in schools, gyms and kindergartens. It has been promoted to community-acquired (CA-MRSA) infection.
A 17-year-old high school student’s fight against MRSA
Last October, a 17-year-old boy named Ashton Bonds from Staunton River High School in Virginia contracted MRSA staph infection, according to CNN. Ashton went to Bedford Memorial Hospital on October 4th with flank pain. After they ruled out appendicitis, they sent him home.
Three days later he was readmitted. By then, the MRSA infection had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs and the muscles surrounding his heart.
Antibiotic treatment was useless. The doctors calmed him down and put him on a ventilator. They were ready to start surgery to try to clear the infection from his lungs. Unfortunately, the blood clot near his heart hit him first.
In his district, 21 schools were immediately closed and thoroughly cleaned to prevent the spread of the disease.
Superbugs are super smart
Although antibiotics have saved millions of lives since their discovery, stories like this show that they are losing their effectiveness. You have to understand how smart bacteria can be. They actually sweep up the dead remains of other bacteria that succumbed to the antibiotic. They can see what killed their brother and transform accordingly. Okay, back to that boy and his father who came to my clinic with a swollen jaw. As you can see, it’s no surprise that they didn’t want to rely on conventional medical treatment.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of treatments available to treat MRSA and other skin infections. Of course, they are natural treatments that cannot be patented and sold as medicine. If they cannot be sold as a drug, who can afford to pay the millions of dollars required for FDA approval?
Thank God for the natural rainforests of the Amazon and India
In these areas, the traditional people have considered the production of herbal medicines as a stream for us to the west. Combining organically grown plant medicines with age-old formulation techniques has provided us with a rich system for human health.
These super bacteria are Mother Earth telling us to keep ourselves healthy with what she has to offer. Why trust processed antibiotics? Extermination as the primary means of ridding the body of toxic bacteria does not work. This has been scientifically proven by outbreaks of MRSA in hospitals across the United States.
For the boy with the swollen chin I prescribed…
Turmeric – 2 capsules with lunch and dinner. (According to a report from the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric’s volatile oil acts as a natural antibiotic. It has been used to treat all kinds of skin and respiratory infections for thousands of years.)
Guduchi – 1-2 capsules in the evening before going to bed. (Lab studies showed that guduchi reduced or eliminated E. coli and upper respiratory tract infection, according to the Indian Journal of Pharmacology 2003.)
Triphala – 1-2 capsules in the evening before going to bed. (A 2006 study by the University of Madras showed that triphala inhibited the growth of common bacterial isolates from HIV patients.)
Superbugs versus Supermen
We talk so much about superbugs as if they are more dangerous to us than other bacteria. They are just very strong in fighting antibiotics. They may no longer be a threat to our immune system. According to Ayurveda, it’s really about how strong your body’s tissues are. Just note the news: People who die from MRSA tend to be elderly or immunocompromised.
In fact, in a healthy body, many microbiologists believe that bacteria mutate to help their host. This may explain why children who grow up with pets under the age of one rarely suffer from asthma or other allergies (more on this in a future issue).
The problem is your body’s ability to release toxins. If your cells are full of toxins, your immune system cannot function properly. Infections happen. Ayurveda teaches that toxemia is the root cause of all diseases. Most of the toxins come from the large intestine. Antibiotics do not remove toxic waste from the blood and intestines.
