Unconscious to Conscious – Discovery of New Planets
In the Sumerian civilization, the knowledge of the circular nature of the planets and the solar system was known as evidence by a relic, an actual Akkadian seal from the third millennium BC. For some reason, only seven bodies in the inner part of the solar system, including the Sun (the star around which the system revolves), were used in classical astrology. These were the bodies that could be seen with the naked eyes of ancient man. Most astrological teachings and knowledge were based on these seven bodies. In recent years, the discovery of new bodies started slowly and accelerated to thousands per month. Thank God the rate of discovery has slowed down. Developing concrete astrological definitions takes an enormous amount of time, as the sheer number has tested our ability to research and determine individually quickly.
Something important is happening here. These new objects are part of a system that evolved 4.5 billion years ago. There is an old saying “There is nothing new under the sun” which implies that nothing new has been invented that somehow did not exist before the invention itself. The key word is discovery, not invention. We discovered electricity, we didn’t invent it. All matter in the solar system existed, but not all matter was and still is not visible. Regardless of how these objects were brought to our conscious attention, capturing their location and trajectory made more objects visible, each requiring identification and specification. These objects already existed, so they were there somewhere, we just didn’t know they were there. If they had an identity, a purpose and a distinctive energy, it worked in a dark or unconscious way. When they became visible, they literally became aware of us. What is unconscious is processed unconsciously. What becomes conscious must now be dealt with in a conscious way. In short –
· The Sun (which is our star), our Moon (which is our satellite) and the five inner planets (not including Earth) were the basis of astronomy and astrology for centuries. Their definition system has changed over time, but the seven bodies are well known.
· Comets have been seen, named and recorded throughout history. They were believed to be predictors of disasters for countries and their leaders. Astronomers and citizens identified long- and short-period comets, their cyclicity, and their impact on the human experience. As of May 2009, there were 3,648 known comets, and more are being discovered regularly. There are believed to be a trillion comets.
· Several moons (satellites) of giant planets were first identified in the 17th century.
· In 1781, Uranus was discovered together with the moons of several different planets.
· In 1801, the first asteroid was discovered – 1 Ceres – the largest body in the asteroid belt. Asteroids are thought to be different from comets in that comets appear to originate from remnants of the formation of the Solar System in the outermost regions of our system. Asteroids appear to come from the interior of the solar system, where the main planets and the original formation are located.
· In 1802, another asteroid was discovered – 2 Pallas – which is larger than Pluto.
· In 1804, the third asteroid – Juno – was discovered.
· In 1807, the fourth asteroid was discovered – Vesta – the second largest body in the asteroid belt.
· In 1845, the Fifth Asteroid – Astraea – was discovered and the pace of search accelerated. The interest rate was in the thousands every month for a while, but has since slowed down.
· In 1846, Neptune and more moons were discovered.
· In 1930, Pluto was discovered, named a planet, and the pace of discovery accelerated.
· 1977 Chiron is discovered. First thought to be an asteroid, then a comet, it is currently classified as both. It is the largest of the comets.
· 90733 Sedna (Pluto’s dwarf planet neighbor) was discovered in 2003 and the list goes on.
As each body becomes clearly identified, its state changes from invisible to visible, from unconscious to conscious. What does that mean for us in terms of experience? When a planet, asteroid or comet is not visible to us, i.e. unconscious, its effect is unknown to us. There is no lack of influence when a planet is invisible, we just cannot consciously recognize that influence. When a planet comes into view, we then have the opportunity to observe its behavior and influence, and a data set can be developed. Once the body is identified, we can go back down memory lane in human history to see how it has affected us and what it has meant to us in our largely unconscious past. In this way we can make what was unconscious conscious. Having done that, we can now weave that energy and pattern into our known and ongoing experience.
When Uranus was discovered, it happened during the American and French revolutions, when people developed a desire to rule themselves and not just be ruled. It marked a new paradigm that became the industrial revolution and the way to the future. So many inventions and discoveries that are now a normal part of our culture were started. Most importantly, the pursuit of freedom and equality motivates people to strive for a better life and future. Humanity had longed for individual freedoms and the ability to improve their lives for the future for centuries, but in a less visible, less drastic way. When the planet that represented that independence, freedom and risk appetite became visible, we had to act accordingly.
When Neptune was discovered, the complete confusion of the early stages of the Civil War was underway. It was a slippery slope as the clear direction eluded our country. Brother fought brother, slavery was a tinderbox issue, we almost destroyed ourselves acting on inspiration for a better way but fighting each other to embody it. There were epidemics, the flourishing of philosophy and religion, the discovery of drugs and medical advances, the invention of photography, which eventually led to the movies, television, and videos we take for granted today. The photograph was a false impression of the person. It was a flat representation of a whole person, but not the person himself. Sometimes we get caught up in the illusions we create. We went to school again about the unconscious within us, but this time about the principles of Neptune. We have certainly made them visible and aware.
When Pluto was discovered, we were already involved in World War (I) and were close to the Great Depression in all the economic abuses supposedly perpetrated by the capitalists. Gangsters almost took over areas of our country and the FBI was brought in to control crime. Research on rockets and nuclear weapons began, leading to the use of the A-bomb in World War II. Psychology rose through its development, allowing us to begin to search for our inner demons, to access the unconscious positions and forces that emerged in humanity. Man’s inhumanity to man became visible and conscious, and we have struggled to understand and control these urges. People have had those negatives hidden inside them and some of them have now come to the fore. In order to heal, we must recognize, know, and understand those forces. The more we discover, the more we make unconscious thoughts and needs conscious. Today we must know and not just faith, is Aquarius’ theme for the new age of enlightenment.
Comets and asteroids also have properties that raise our consciousness and should be studied and applied just like the planets. We know less about them and develop their meanings, but they are visible. They are aware. We have to learn to live with them and their messages.
Comets have been with us for centuries, with many recorded sightings and observations of impact on the human experience. Comets were thought to be heavenly messengers that signaled the rise and fall of rulers and countries. When Halley’s Comet last revealed itself (February 1986), skeptics scoffed at the notion of a leader or earth rising or falling. But history shows the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier of Haiti (February 1986) and Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines (also in February 1986). For someone scoffed at by skeptics, this is a pretty amazing coincidence, isn’t it?
The physical impact of comets was seriously debated until 1994, when fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter one after the other with devastating consequences for that giant planet. There was no longer any doubt that the comet’s descent could make a stunning impression. When we landed on the comet on July 4, 2005 (Deep Impact), we made the comets truly conscious in our human consciousness. Now we need to understand their impact on humanity in a conscious way.
We have found so many types of asteroids in so many places, both far away and close enough to affect Earth and its inhabitants. Due to the possibility of a collision, we make close scientific observations and plan our reaction if a land grazer comes too close. As I write this, an asteroid or piece of space debris is scheduled to pass close to Earth, about 80,000 miles away (that’s between us and our Moon). We ignore these bodies or debris at our peril. They have always been there and affected the Earth and other planets and moons since the beginning of the formation of the solar system. They must now become part of our consciousness and part of what we know just as a matter of survival.
When an object is invisible and unknown, it affects us in the same unconscious way. At our rapid rate of discovery, it is difficult for us to become aware of so much so quickly. When we go out and hit a planet, an asteroid, a satellite, a comet, we make it personal. Can we handle a similar response from the universe? Awareness is the answer and the time is now.
