Natural Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Protocol for Autistic Children

Essential daily vitamins and minerals for children with autism.

I am writing this article for parents of autistic children who struggle daily to find ways to help their children. As the proud parent of an autistic child, I have spent thousands of dollars on supplements, various natural and conventional doctors, and testing. As an avid researcher, in this article I have presented the basis of my research to help you safely and naturally help your children.

I acknowledge much of my research breakthroughs to the Pfeifer Treatment Center, Dr. Garry F. Gordon, Dr. Jeff Bradstreet, Dr. William Shaw, and Dr. Bernard Rimland. As you begin the natural path to help your children. Dr. Jethro Kloss one of the best documenters of alternative medicine explained it best. When using alternative medicine, it takes 6 months to heal for every year of illness. Homeopathy and vitamin therapy can provide immediate improvements that you will notice within the first month. It takes time. I have found that most parents give up on natural therapy because it doesn’t work as quickly as drugs. Drugs suppress the problem, and natural methods can provide a way to locate the source of the worry in the body, which restores the healing process.

I am writing this from my years of heartache and hundreds of hours of research. I’ve made major breakthroughs in a number of natural ways, most of which I’ll cover in this article.

My biggest disagreement with mainstream doctors and medicine is that autism is treated more as a psychological problem. I think anyone who treats autism as a psychological disorder is going in the wrong direction. Autism is best treated as a biological disorder. Using the principles of naturopathic medicine may provide more answers to this growing diagnosis.

Most doctors and parents have found more success in helping autistic children with digestive disorders, allergies, environmental toxins, and nutritional diet adjustments.

This area does not include drugs for therapy. The only exception to the inclusion of drugs is to use short-term rescue from child self-harm if they are extremely volatile in nature, while implementing naturopathy to reduce drugs.

Autism is indicated for changes in the functioning of the central nervous system and brain. It starts with immune system dysfunction, allergies and digestive disorders that can appear early in childhood. Natural methods focus on cleaning the digestive tract, which is often a mess in children with autism.

Autistic children excrete large amounts of sulfate in their urine, about ten times more than normal children. It is a great disservice to give autistic children processed foods such as sandwiches, hot dogs, canned food with lots of sulfate additives. Why? Because when an autistic child excretes sulfates, it also pulls cysteine out of the body. Cysteine is vital in the production of glutathione, which is essential for brain health. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are often associated with low glutathione levels. This also causes autistic children to accumulate and not filter many toxins out of the body.

Most autistic children cannot digest protein properly. This is indicated by pancreatic enzyme deficiency. This gives a factor to digestive and gastrointestinal problems. Diarrhea and constipation are often changing problems because they can store toxins in the body. There is also “leaky gut syndrome” where there can be small holes in the lining of the gut that cause toxins to leak from the gut into the bloodstream. This is detected by showing lactulose in a stool test, which can easily be given to a child to determine if they have leaky gut. Testing can also show the presence of protein fragments from the incomplete digestion of gluten (wheat) and casein (dairy). A comprehensive stool analysis can be done in the comfort of your own home and sent to a reputable laboratory for analysis. The source of the testing is Great Plains Laboratory.

Some of these protein fragments bind to opioid receptors in the brain. This results in highly hyperactive behavior, aggressive behavior, and an inability to focus, retain memory, or pay attention. These protein fragments from leaky gut that leak into the bloodstream and block opioid receptors in the brain are what drive the abnormal behavior we see.

Another neurotoxin that can be released into the bloodstream from leaky gut syndrome is Claustridium. Researchers at the University of Michigan describe an interesting case where a dog accidentally ate the feces of an autistic child and fell into a coma for 7 days. “Researchers found high levels of clausrid toxins in the feces of an autistic child.”

A natural treatment protocol

I am still heavily researching DMSA chelation. DMSA chelation is done to remove mercury and other heavy metals. Although parents have reported improvement in their behavior, I don’t feel comfortable reporting on any research yet. I had more success with Homeopathic Chelation for heavy metal toxicity. I will describe this protocol in detail in a future article.

The best thing to do in the first place is to eliminate as many common allergy-causing foods as possible. This includes corn, wheat, soy and nuts. Some parents have succeeded in eliminating milk and white and wheat flour based products.

My child has been on a gluten-free diet for four years. I have cut out all dairy except Parmesan. There have been some great gluten-free recipes that create tasty snacks with parmesan. I have noticed that his demeanor is calmer and more focused on this diet. Most parents find that when they accidentally slip and give their child something out of the diet, they find that certain abnormal behaviors return shortly after gluten or casein is ingested. It took about 45 days before I noticed an improvement. This may vary depending on your child’s condition.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential. Autistic children are almost always disabled. Omega-3 is critical for normal neurological development. Dr. Jeff Bradstreet has recommended that 1,000 mg per day is a reasonable starting dose. Some parents with children 11 and older can safely go up to 3,000 mg.

NAC (N-acetylcysteine) most autistic children are deficient in cysteine. Many doctors consider this the basis of treatment. NAC is the forerunner of glutathione, an essential player in cleaning important liver pathways. It is recommended to start with a small dose. 25 mg/day and every three months increase by 25 mg until you reach 200 mg per day.

Probiotics must be introduced. Some naturopaths wait until severe GI abnormalities are resolved before using them. However, probiotics are safe for adults and children of all ages. I don’t recommend waiting. The best varieties can be found in the refrigerated section of many health food stores. It is important to supplement the gut with healthy flora to strengthen the immune system. Probiotic supplements are the easiest and safest way to achieve this.

Vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene are all important antioxidants. Children with autism are usually disabled. Pfiefer Treatment Center recommended vitamin A for my daughter in the form of lemon-flavored cod liver oil. I ordered it from http://www.kirkmanlabs.com. You have to keep it in the fridge. I gave him one tablespoon in a Dixie cup mixed with a dash of natural orange syrup (you can buy flavored syrups at the drugstore) and at first I gave it with a big spoonful. Now my daughter takes the Dixie cup by herself. Vitamin CI in a raspberry flavored drink powder called “Emergen C”. At first, I just mixed ½ teaspoon of the crystals into the natural orange flavored syrup in a large saucepan. Right now my daughter drinks it with water. The best EI vitamin is made by Carlson Labs or Solgar. For younger children, you can break one capsule and mix with 400 IU natural syrup if your child does not swallow the capsules.

P-5-P, also known as Pyridoxal 5′ Phosphate, is a coenzyme form of vitamin B6 that is more easily absorbed by the body. I am still doing research on the different forms of vitamin B. There is an area of vitamin B research that shows which form of vitamin B is best for your child based on their condition. For now, I can safely recommend pyridoxal 5-phosphate. I will produce additional research on the effectiveness of taking a vitamin B complex in a future article. Pyridoxal 5-phosphate is vital for the balance of the neurotransmitter in the brain.

Zinc picolinate is needed to promote both serotonin and melatonin in the brain. Children suffering from zinc deficiency are often irritable, depressed and difficult to calm down. Autistic patients are usually deficient in zinc, magnesium and calcium. Calcium and magnesium are best taken as a powder at bedtime with zinc picolinate. I have previously written an Associated Content article explaining the importance of calcium intake and the best way to do it. Pycnogenol, derived from French pines, and L-theanine, derived from green tea, have been shown to effectively improve cognitive function and help produce calm yet focused attention. The best form of L-theanine I have found is a chewable orange flavored tablet developed by Dr. Michael Murray of Focus Factors.

Coenzyme Q10 and DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) are also recommended for healthy brain receptor function. Some natural practitioners add L-carnitine and/or L-carnosine to this. I am still researching the efficacy of L-carnitine and L-carnosine. I am also lunching with Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum). There are tests that show autistic children have liver failure. Milk Thistle is a recommended method for liver cleansing and detoxification. However, I have not fully evaluated this treatment process.

Selenium can be taken in a dose of 25 mcg/day. This mineral acts as a detoxifying agent in detoxification by binding to mercury to form selenium-mercury complexes that can be safely excreted in the urine. It is also integral to the production of glutathione peroxidase, an important antioxidant enzyme.

Putting it all together

I just named several recommendations. You are probably wondering how to get your child to take all these things in a day. Most parents who treat their children according to natural protocols give up to 30-68 different products a day. If your child can swallow capsules, you divide the doses and choose two or three times a day.

You can take Omega 3 fatty acids, NAC, probiotics, vitamins A, C, E and CoQ10 with breakfast.

P5P, Pycnogenol, L-Theanine, Selenium, Co-Q10 at lunch

Calcium, magnesium and zinc at dinner/bedtime.

I have broken this down considering that the recommendations given above when taken at breakfast is the optimal time to absorb and be absorbed into the body.

If your child does not swallow the capsules

You can mix it into a smoothie, shake or sorbet. Most parents buy a mortar and pestle to crush the capsules (or attach the gel caps and squeeze the liquid or powder out of them). They mix it with a suspended flavored syrup from the local pharmacy. Flavored syrups used in drinks (strawberry, vanilla, etc.) also work the same way.

There are natural compound pharmacies that can make this into 1-2 capsules for your child. However, I recommend taking them as separate components for the first month if you need to adjust dosages to supplement your child’s needs before mixing formula.
