Model Relentless Diligence
“Colonel” Harlan Sanders, 65, died broke, slept battered in his old car and drove around the US for years trying to get restaurant owners to serve a pressure-cooked fried chicken recipe he named Kentucky Fried Chicken…
Sylvester Stallone endured years and years and years of rejection from every Hollywood studio when he shopped his unheard-of script about a mythical boxer named “Rocky.”
What is the connection between Jan Vermeer, Colonel Sanders, Sylvester Stallone and you? Absurd diligence. That’s the connection. How relentlessly hardworking are you? If you’re a successful speaker, you know about relentless diligence.
If you’re not enjoying the success of the talking business you crave, listen up. These articles are for you. For over 20 years (Where Did the Time Go) I have been speaking, training, writing and mentoring on a national (now international) level.
Here’s proof that relentless diligence is an important key to success in business. I am a good speaker, not a good speaker. I proved that anyone can be successful in this business.
My Version of Relentless Diligence: Living in Santa Monica, (Pacific Time Zone) Get up a little after 4am, run 3 miles, meditate, shower, eat, get dressed. On the phone by 5 a.m. Eastern time zone decision makers. Smile and call, smile and call, smile and call. Work westward through the time zones until 9 am. Always calls early in the morning when the day is young.
Ask the right questions, always empathetic and caring. I’m more interested in adding value to the meeting than my fee. We will follow carefully. 15 hours a week of this (when you’re not on the road) yields about 75 breakout sessions and just a few keynotes each year. Great payments. Six figure income. A comfortable lifestyle.
Of course you have to have words of wisdom to share from the platform. A decent single sheet. At least the audio demo. A video demo is better. A website, even a modest one. A home office that you can work from. And you must never give up, never give up, never give up.
Let’s face it, life isn’t fair. And hundreds of wannabes go from trying to survive to succeeding and being great every year. Why not you? Do a thousand and one small things better every day. Focus on moving, moving, moving.
Model Relentless diligence, model Relentless diligence, model Relentless diligence. It never ends. This is the price you pay to be successful as a speaking expert. Every successful expert who speaks is a champion.
Success In Voice Business: You Can Have It If You Want It. And you have to want it enough to get it.
