How to Shop Smartly for Fashion in Paris

Going to Paris for shopping doesn’t need to burden your household finances for the next two years. It just requires a bit of planning and getting admitted to little-known stores with cheap basement deals.

Paris is a mosaic of shopping

Those of you who have visited Paris will already know that from a shopper’s perspective, the city is divided into large sections where stores of the same trade tend to congregate. A mosaic of colors, tastes and price ranges.

Take Saint-Germain-des-Prés, for example. The highest part of the famous district, located closest to Boulevard St Germain, is home to designer clothing boutiques, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Immerse yourself and your steps will take you to rue de Seine where the art galleries have gathered.

From Saint-Germain, go up rue de Rennes, towards the Montparnasse district. You will cross rue Du Four where even more expensive drapers line the facades. But continue to the Saint Sulpice metro station, around which many clothing stores offer cheaper clothes and accessories.

Sale season in Paris

In another area of the city, not too far from the old Opera, Boulevard Haussmann became the stronghold of department stores more than a century ago. The Printemps store was built there in 1865, followed closely by the Galeries Lafayette in 1893. The department stores are reminiscent of Ali Baba’s cave of treasures: clothes, shoes, jewelry, watches, accessories, perfumes spread over a gigantic five-storey floor. space out.

Their selection is large, but you have to visit Paris during the official sales seasons to find real bargains. And there are only two sales seasons in France: winter and summer. Their respective start dates in a given year are fixed by administrative decree and they each last 6 weeks. In Paris, the winter sales season usually begins the second week of January. The summer sale season begins towards the end of June.

Good deals from the designer deposit

For off-season bargains, look elsewhere. Gems are often found in small shops on abandoned streets or in hard-to-find apartments on the first floor. This is particularly the case for deposits from creators.

Although it has become a brand name in North America, a designer deposit is actually a form of commerce. People like you and me bring clothes we don’t want to wear anymore and get some money from the store owner who will resell our clothes for some more money to other people.

I hear your blasé comments: “Tcha! Dépôt-vente! Friperies!…” Well, in Paris, designer depots aren’t exactly the usual Salvation Army-type stores. No way.

Although they are not all equal before God, Parisian designer depots are often owned and managed by women from the fashion industry. Women with flair and a keen eye for what to wear and how. Women who can easily tell you why you would look better in this dress than in that one.

In ‘designer depot’, there is the magic word ‘designer’. Parisian designer depots offer designer and couture clothing at very low prices. And beware, clothes in almost perfect condition. Clothes worn once. Well, maybe two.

If you come to them with your usual hoodies, or your tennis shoes from last season, or your mall polo shirt for that matter, don’t expect to be welcomed. Instead, expect rejection with a disapproving look.

So where are they hiding?

Then again, not all designer depots are created equal, and where you go to buy designer clothes that are virtually perfect in every way is the true measure of your intimate knowledge of the city.

I would like to recommend three ‘small addresses’ [the French for ‘best-kept-secret places’] I chose from a host of others.

For those of you ladies who love the classic look, ‘Priscilla’ is the shop for you. Priscilla owns the place. She worships names such as Yves Saint Laurent, Max Mara, Kenzo, Christian Dior and Sonya Rykiel. Its prices range from 60 euros for a skirt, to 75 euros for a jacket, to 130 euros for a women’s suit. Priscilla advises you to poke around and come to her house with an open mind. The boutique is located at 4 rue Mouton-Duvernet, in the 14th arrondissement. The nearest metro station is Mouton-Duvernet. Its opening hours are from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Mondays, and from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday with a one-hour break at 1:30 p.m.

My next address, ‘Le Jupon Rouge’, is located at 9 rue de Rochechouart in the 9th arrondissement. Owner Tania describes the designer depot here as “colorful, ethnic but not hippie, and certainly not classically styled.” Tania offers a selection of emerging French designers such as Bali Barret (a fencing-style vest at 45 euros, cashmere-blend cardigans from 45 to 100 euros) and Vanessa Bruno (wool jackets at 90 euros). She also wears more established signatures such as Agnès B (her signature black jacket is on offer at 50 euros) and vintage Ungaro blouses at 45 euros. Ladies looking for shoes can fall for pairs of low Cuban boots Stéphane Kelian (100 EUR), Repetto ballet flats (40 EUR) or vintage low-heel riding boots (40-70 EUR). Tania opens its doors to you from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break at 1:30 p.m.

In a completely different style, Griff-Troc is the depot of creators in which you have to get lost when you want to do chic-chic-chic. The owner, Béatrice, has chosen to specialize in perennial, classic basics that are in perfect condition. Chic has a higher price tag, of course, but on the upside Griff-Troc offers brand names for 15-30% off boutique prices. On the shelves at the time I was writing this article, Béatrice had a Chanel suit at 1000 euros (vs 5000 euros at Chanel), a brand new Chloé bag at 800 euros (instead of 1200 euros), several amazing evening dresses between 1200 and 1500 euros (Chloé, Dior, D&G, Valentino), and Hermès silk scarves offered for only 150 euros. She maintains a comprehensive selection of bags, jewelry and fragrances. Classic chic never dies, who cares if your Chanel suit is from this season or not? The lively boutique is located in the upscale 17th arrondissement, at 119 Boulevard Malesherbes. The nearest metro stations are Villiers and Monceau. Its opening hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

More shopping tips to come

These are just three of my selection of designer depots and small boutiques. In the following articles, I will recommend more of these “small addresses”, including some specializing in men’s clothing. In the meantime, I hope you’ve had the opportunity to meet Tania, Béatrice and Priscilla in person and find a few articles that will please your eyes. Ta-ta!
