Essential Strength Books – Beyond Brawn by Stuart McRoberts
A hardgainer is a lean person who struggles to gain muscle mass. I had been following Stuart McRobert’s hardgainer.com for a while before picking up a copy of Beyond Brawn. I am currently 6′8″ and normally weigh between 240 and 250. At the time I received my first driver’s license, I was 6′7″ and weighed 150 pounds. A lot of the progress I was able to make was following the methods I had read about in hardgainer.
I’ve always been a fan of McRobert’s writing style and his obvious passion for bodybuilding. He is a strong man who has acquired a deep knowledge of the game of iron. Have you ever met someone who was so passionate about something that you couldn’t help but get excited when you heard them talk about it? That’s how I felt when (don’t laugh) the dean of my library school talked about cataloging. He talked about it like a fiery Baptist preacher, and it was impossible not to rejoice. (This feeling faded immediately after leaving the room).
Stuart McRobert’s writing ignites you from page one and stays with you. Too often books on training are tired repetitions of what’s been said a billion times before. Recycled Bullet Lists. Lots of harsh words but not enough humility. When someone who’s achieved something I want is also willing to say “Listen, I’ve made a ton of mistakes in my training over the years. I’ve lost a lot of time and got seriously injured “, that means something to me. At the end of one of the Die Hard movies, John Mclane was still beaten within an inch of his life. He does heroic things, but we know he’s going to get a good beating by the time he sorts everyone out.
McRoberts does not pretend to know everything and he admits his mistakes. He’s so focused on his mistakes, in fact, that – it sounds a bit silly – you get to know him by the end of the book. He does not present himself as a guru, but as a normal guy who has figured out how to become strong. Larger than life characters are hard to identify unless you are part of the larger than life club. A man’s humanity is never more fully on display than when he admits he’s vulnerable to the same mistakes, hurts, and insecurities as anyone else.
There are two main selling points to this book.
1. McRoberts is someone to look up to
He is humble but incredibly competent. Her desire to help others shines through on every page.
And that gives me a chance to segue skillfully into…
point number 2:
The contents. Want complete? You got it
Anyone who puts “Encyclopedia” on the cover of a book is either a cheeky poser who begs to make money before being exposed, or someone like Stuart McRobert. Encyclopedic knowledge has a wide scope and depth. You only get encyclopedic content two ways: either a team of smart people work together on tons of little articles to prepare for the next edition, or one person pays their dues, pays attention and takes their time (years!) To synthesize their knowledge. for the teeming masses.
Flip through Beyond Brawn and it’s quickly apparent that you’re dealing with an encyclopedia. Maybe you’re not naturally a curious person and just like to throw heavy things. If picking up the latest copy of the Brittanica doesn’t rev your engine, let me reassure you that BB is a thrill book for strength lovers.
A summary of McRobert’s philosophy
- It’s a privilege to train hard
- Most people who train have no idea what a “hard” workout is.
- Short attention span and information overload keep most people from getting the results they want
- It takes hard work to get these results, but it’s not complicated.
- Squat, Deadlift and Bench if your body is healthy enough.
- Don’t hurt yourself.
- When in doubt, train less often, not more.
- Practice good nutrition
- Get enough rest
Sounds like a lot of other books, doesn’t it?
This is not the case. He is able to say the “same old things” in a way that will resonate with you. He’s also adept at illustrating which methods don’t work without being condescending to anyone who practices them. More than anything, it is sad and frustrating for people engaged in a noble pursuit, but wasting the training of their lives keeping their wheels turning.
Beyond Brawn does not have any photos. Very little formatting. Just block paragraph after paragraph block of smart and applicable information that you can benefit from immediately. I’ve never read such a thick book so quickly, and I’ve read a lot of thick books. There is not a missed line or paragraph in the entire volume.
As I said before, most important is McRobert’s mindset and passion… his respect for the pursuit of strength. If you are interested in strength, positive thinking, or goal achievement, you must read this book. It’s equal parts self-help, a roadmap to power, a reference tool, and a masterpiece of encouragement for those days when you need help. a helping hand to get you back on track.
Read it, read it, read it, then read it again. “Empower” isn’t a word I can use very often without rolling my eyes. Too corporate-speak. But Beyond Brawn will make you feel stronger. You will be eager to find it on the second page.
