Five Fun, Yet Frugal, Ways to Entertain Friends at Home
To keep stress at bay, you would need to relax, unwind and spend time with friends. But with restaurant meals, drinks, and movie tickets getting more expensive every year, almost everyone can’t help but be careful with their budget. And with the reality of paying off student loans or credit card debt, forget about trips and vacations to exotic places for now.
But have you ever thought that the most overlooked place to hang out and have fun might be your home? You may be renting a modest apartment with a roommate, or your first home after college may boast only a few modest pieces of furniture.
Still, you shouldn’t let that get in the way of creating a cozy atmosphere where your friends can relax and have fun. If you’ve run out of fun things to do, here are five frugal activities:
(1.) Improve your board games
Newspaper dance? Musical chairs? Pin the tail on the donkey? Do these games conjure up images of you and your playmates on your seventh birthday? Well, it’s time to go for an “upgrade” and find creative ways to inject some adult-friendly fun into your board games.
Two of the most popular “icebreaker type” games that tend to say a lot about individuals are I have never___ and Would you rather ___ or ___? They require very little equipment and can be played by as few as two to four participants.
For I have never ___, have a pack of 4″ x 6″ unlined index cards and several markers handy. Ask each participant to get two cards and write “NEVER” on one card and “I HAVE” on the second card.
As the host, come up with a dozen statements and write them down on a piece of paper. You can make them as interesting or as controversial as possible, outrageous or incredulous, or even slightly risque.
And then read each statement aloud, and if it rings true for a particular player, they must show their “I HAVE” card. If he has never done so, he must re-roll his “NEVER” card.
Here are some examples of revealing statements:
I have never ___
…faking sick just to get out of a speeding ticket.
… slipped into an R-18 film when I was underage.
…embellished my credentials on a resume just to land a job.
… stepped back from a first date.
The game ends as soon as the last item on your list is played. This game is known for getting lots of laughs from players, and even slight expressions of surprise.
Would you prefer ___ or ___? is to choose between two options, which can be good and better, or bad and worse. Examples are:
Would you rather ___
… getting stuck on an island with your surly boss or narcissistic ex?
… be the tail of a lion or the head of a mouse?
… giving up junk food for a month or pizza for a year?
… spend $100 at a thrift store or at Michael’s?
As the host, write a dozen statements with two choices on a sheet of paper and read them aloud one at a time. Have fun seeing which friends will choose what.
(2.) Host a themed movie marathon
You may have movie-loving friends, while others may be indifferent to movies and would just like to hang out with you and your group. Why not download several films with similar themes and have a fun afternoon with your team?
Prepare a microwaveable box of popcorn and serve a variety of drinks: cola, lemonade, iced tea, etc. You can also buy huge bags of chips or nachos and research dip recipes.
Possible themes could be works by acclaimed directors, girl-on-ladies movies, Marvel movies, or some of the best Disney-Pixar offerings.
(3.) Introduce some adult card or board games
Scrabble, Monopoly, Snakes ‘n’ Ladders and Pictionary have remained popular among children through the ages. But for adults looking to get together, playing some of the latest card or board games can be a great alternative to going out for dinner and drinks.
Although buying a deck of cards or a set of board games can be expensive, there are now plenty of games that can suit any budget. And according to the boardgamegeek site[dot]com, countless games are now being marketed for specific niches and gamer interests.
You and your friends don’t need to limit yourselves to Cards Against Humanity and Settlers of Catan. For beginners, millennials, and today’s young professionals may want to try #SocialStarwhile fans of pop music and quizzes will be delighted by games like 300 pop questions, anecdotes about the music of the 70s, and The game of the 80s.
(4.) Turn it into an exchange
Some of your friends might want to declutter, get rid of their old stuff, and might be open to acquiring second-hand stuff that is still in good condition. If you have multiple bookworms in your party, you can trade paperback editions of books, magazines, and even comics or graphic novels.
If they lean towards the athletic side, they might want to swap golf clubs for a pair of tennis or squash rackets, or resistance bands and dumbbells for a basketball or volleyball.
(5.) Make it an art-centric activity
For this activity, you may need to ask your friends to contribute some money, to stretch your budget for art materials. Buy several sets of artist-grade acrylics or watercolors (just get the basic set of 12 colors to keep costs down), an acrylic canvas, or a few packs of watercolor paper.
Beforehand, look for painting tutorials on YouTube. Don’t worry too much about producing something aesthetically pleasing, but make sure everyone puts in a little effort. When everyone has finished their masterpieces, pull out your smartphones and snap some photos.
