How to Find a Comfortable Bicycle Saddle

If you’ve been cycling for more than a few years and live in an area where you can’t cycle year-round, you may find that your bike saddle isn’t as comfortable in the spring as you remember it in the fall before you. put it away for the winter. This applies even if you ride a stationary bike in the winter. The saddles of stationary bikes tend to be larger and more padded than those of traditional bikes. Also most people don’t ride stationary bikes as long as they ride traditional bikes there are no bumps, gravel or potholes to hit on a stationary bike so a saddle acceptable on a stationary bike will probably not be as comfortable on a traditional bike.

Note that until now I have always called it a saddle, not a seat and believe it or not there is a reason for that. When I was growing up and before I started to change from a person who loved to ride a bike to a real cyclist, I used the terms seat and saddle interchangeably. After reading several articles on the subject, the most recent by the late Sheldon Brown, I have come to appreciate the difference between a seat and a saddle.

Sheldon explained it this way: a seat is something you sit on and is designed to support all of your weight, much like a chair would. Recumbent bikes use upright seats, traditional bikes have saddles. Saddles are designed to support some of the rider’s weight, but not all of it. The legs as well as the arms and hands also carry part of the rider’s weight. So you see that the bike saddle is found on traditional upright bikes. Bike seats are found on recumbent bikes.

At this point, I don’t have or ride a recumbent bike, so this article will focus primarily on the traditional 2-wheeled bike. It also doesn’t really cover saddles for BMX bikes, since BMX riders spend most of their riding time out of the saddle, the saddle is more of an ornament for them, except when they’re riding. wait for the race.

The average recreational rider will ride their bike until it gets cold outside, then set it up for the winter and bring it back to ride when the weather warms up in the spring. The rider rides a few miles on his bike from last year and the saddle isn’t as comfortable as it was in the fall. The cyclist then goes to the nearest bicycle shop or searches the Internet for a new saddle. The purchase is made and after a few tens of kilometers the new saddle feels better, so they stick to it and remove the old one. This scenario can continue every year, not because there is anything wrong with the old saddle, but because the rider has to get used to riding again. In most cases, gradually getting back to riding by doing short rides first and then adding miles each time you ride is the best way to tell if you really have a neat new saddle or just need to get used to driving more.

If after trying for a while you still think a new saddle is what you need, here are some things to consider.

The width of the saddle is crucial for your comfort. Your seat bones or ischial tuberosities are designed to support your body weight when you sit. If the weight is carried between the seat bones rather than on them, you will be uncomfortable. If the saddle is too narrow, the soft tissues will support the weight of the body. If the saddle is too wide, you may notice chafing on your inner thigh, especially when it’s warmer outside and you sweat more.

The material the saddle is made of makes a difference in comfort. Personally, I prefer leather saddle for my bike, but it doesn’t have to be thin Italian leather, just stretched regularly, vinyl is too slippery and Lycra isn’t as durable as leather or the vinyl. The heavily padded seats are comfortable for short trips, but tend to get uncomfortable quickly as the trips get longer.

Often the cause of the pain is not the saddle itself but the adjustment of the saddle and whether or not the bike suits the rider. Before you throw away a perfectly good saddle and lay down 100.00 or more on a fancy new saddle, make sure your bike actually fits you and is properly tuned.

You may need help adjusting the bike or setting the saddle correctly. Any good bike shop should be able to help. You can also do a Google search for bike mounting and find many variations of mounting a rider on a bike.
