Enough Is Enough and I’ve Had Enough
I’ve had enough of certain things. However, there are some things I can’t get enough of. Apple donuts and coffee are things I never tire of. I would never use the word “enough” with these words.
Some things are in that “I’ve had enough” category.
Recently, the gracious mistress of the parsonage said, “Your birthday is approaching. What do you want to do for your birthday?
I looked at her like I had never looked at her before and said, “Enough, I’ve had enough of birthdays, I don’t want another birthday.”
She looked at me, laughed as usual and said, “Silly boy, everyone has a birthday.”
In a way, I guess she’s right, but I’ve had enough birthdays and I don’t want another birthday.
I think birthday parties are pretty silly when you get to a certain age. Of course, when you’re young and full of energy, you looked forward to birthday parties. You’ve been looking forward to all the birthday presents you’re about to receive. Nothing is more exciting than celebrating a birthday.
It is definitely a stage of life. However, this stagecoach left the ranch. I’ve had enough birthdays.
One of the aggravating things about a birthday is that you have to disclose your age. You know, when you say, for example, “I’m 60”, people will always respond by saying, “You don’t look 60”.
Everyone knows that’s code for saying “You look really old.”
Or, someone will say, “60 is the new 40”. I have no idea what that means, but I sure don’t want to relive 40 years.
Mind you, I have nothing against birthday cakes and such. I’ve had enough birthday cakes all my life that I probably don’t need anymore. If only I could get a birthday cake without all the din and chants of “Happy Birthday to you…”
But there is one main concern I have about my birthday. I thought about it quite deeply and came to my final conclusion.
This conclusion is that I really don’t know when my birthday is.
It may sound silly, but I have good reason to question the actual date of birth. Unfortunately, I don’t remember anything from that day. I have a vague memory of being suspended by my feet and someone slapping my back. That’s all I remember.
I don’t know the exact date and year.
Once my wife said to me, “Well, your parents told you what your birthday was. You should trust them.
And here is the problem. It’s a trust issue. In the first years of my life, as soon as it started, my parents used to lie to me.
For example. It took me years to find out that they lied to me about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. For many years they assured me that there was a real Santa Claus and a real Easter Bunny. Can you imagine the heartbreak I felt when I found out they weren’t telling me the truth?
If they didn’t tell me the truth about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, how can I be sure they told me the truth about my real date of birth?
Someone once told me that I had a birth certificate, but I don’t know the validity of this birth certificate. I don’t remember being present when this certificate was signed. How to know if it is not false?
It took me a long time to realize that even the tooth fairy wasn’t real. When they told me about the Tooth Fairy, I couldn’t wait to pull a tooth out of my mouth and put it under my pillow.
Imagine the disappointment I felt when I found out there was no such thing as a tooth fairy.
If I took the time to investigate, I would probably find many more things my parents told me that turned out to be wrong. So when it comes to my date of birth, how can I really believe that’s my real date of birth?
What if I’m not as old as my parents say?
So, with all the information I couldn’t find, how can I celebrate my birthday again? I think I should put it aside like I did with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. I should put it in the same category, laugh it off and say, “Ha, ha, ha, none of that is true.”
“What do you mean,” my wife asked me, “you’re not going to celebrate your birthday anymore?”
I explained to him that I had celebrated enough birthdays, one birthday that I’m not sure is my actual birthday, so I don’t need to celebrate it anymore. Enough is certainly enough.
“And my birthday?” »
I just looked at her and said, “We will definitely celebrate your birthday at least once a year.” She smiled and I let her.
Later that evening I thought of a scripture I had read in the morning. “The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, You have tarried long enough on this mountain” (Deuteronomy 1:6). God was trying to move Israel forward.
Like Israel, sometimes we can stay “long enough” in a certain place and then we have to move on.
