Raw Food Diet – When & How Did Raw Foods Come About?
Is the raw food diet a new fad or trend that is seeping into Asia as the latest fashion statement? Well, I’ve never been a fan of History, BUT I’m definitely a curious cat. And because I’m still alive (more than ever!), let’s explore some facts and research on the history of raw food, its evolution, and its place in humanity. Now, be warned, there is a TON of sometimes conflicting information on this topic that can stun even a seasoned reader. And how should I go about it? Simple – I just look at facts, research done by recognized professionals and institutes, and real living examples. And then of course I listened to my own body to see what worked for me. It’s quite easy actually!
Humans suffer from degenerative diseases generation after generation. Over the past decade, it seems to be spiraling out of control. I have always noticed and been disturbed by the never-ending battle against new, never-before-seen diseases and conditions while our scientists furiously invent new “pills and drugs” to cure….
Before the history of raw food was documented, there was evidence from countries like Iran and India where early communities ate and thrived on raw vegan foods…Humans only learned and only started cooking after discovering fire, and we are also the only species to cook our food.
Hippocrates was a student at “Mathematikoi” (a religious and philosophical school founded by Phythagoras where all students had to be vegetarians), and Hipporates is a well-known figure (the father of medicine). According to research, Hippocrates and Phythagoras ate a primary raw vegan diet.
In 1930, Dr. Paul Kouchakoff (of the Institute of Clinical Chemistry in Lausanne, Switzerland) proved a condition of the human body known as “digestive leukocytosis”. This is a reaction where the white blood cells in the body increase immediately and only occur when cooked food is eaten. When natural, unheated plants are eaten, leukocytosis did not occur. And what is this hyperleukocytosis relevant to? It is actually a stress response produced by the body when it is invaded by a dangerous pathogen (i.e. harmful virus) or trauma.
In 1933, Forbes EB wrote an article saying that “Cooking makes food mushy, so that it sticks to the teeth and undergoes acid fermentation…” His article linked the consumption of cooked food to dental degeneration.
In 1936, dentist Weston A Prince also observed the latter among an evolving generation that abandoned pure nutrient-dense foods for processed foods devoid of nutrients. This was coincidentally a period of the beginning of civilization for mankind.
In 1941, Dr. Edward Howell, an Illinois physician, wrote Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity. And in 1981 he published Enzyme Nutrition And “Eat Me Raw”. These 2 books claimed that the pancreas is forced to work harder on a diet of cooked foods and that food enzymes are just as essential for digestion as the body’s self-generated enzymes.
In 1966, A. Hovannessian cured his sick child with raw food and published a book called “Raw Eating” in Iran.
In the late 1960s, Viktoras Kulvinskas and Ann Wigmore discovered the powerful healing benefits of a raw diet. They opened the Hippocrates Institute (which by the way is still very active today and run by Dr. Brian and Dr. Maria Clement). The Institute cures patients suffering from “incurable diseases”.
In 1975, after Viktoras published “Survival into the 21st Century,” raw foods began to seep into the mainstream. The Gersons Institute (based on raw food healing research by Dr. Max Gerson) was established shortly thereafter in 1977. Leslie Kenton’s 1984 “The New Raw Energy” further increased exposure to the diet believed.
Until then, raw foods were still mostly salads and boring juices. Next came pioneering gourmet chef Juliano, who burst onto the scene with his restaurant “Raw” in Los Angeles, California. It attracted movie stars and models who suddenly seemed to gain in youth and beauty without surgery, which attracted the attention of the media! And did you know that Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson and Alicia Silverstone are raw foodies? I wouldn’t mind having that body and that youth, not at all! 😉
Since then, the raw food scene has exploded with new raw gourmet chefs, books, institutions to teach raw gourmet cooking, raw food courses, and even movies being made right now! You can see young and energetic “raw gurus” popping up all over the US, UK and yes, even Asia now. Go ahead and look for it – they are everywhere!
So, what is my vision of Raw Vegan Foodism? Is a 100% Raw Vegan diet the best for your health? For me, it’s pretty simple…I know that just adding more fresh vegetables and fruit to any of my meals makes them healthier and more nutritious. We shouldn’t promote a raw vegan or even vegan/vegetarian diet for everyone, because honestly, no one has the right to dictate what is a perfect diet for you. Because you are unique and have your own special nutritional needs. As long as it works for your body, eat the freshest, least adulterated, least processed foods you can get your hands on. Just listen to your body and pay attention. Instead of 100% Raw or Vegan, focus on 100% healthy! We have enough evidence, medical advice and even government endorsements that encourage the daily consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables to know that these are good for us. Period. Never mind, 100% raw or not, 100% vegan or not… if you’re like me, you’ll just want to get the most nutrients and taste out of every meal!
2 years ago, I spent like a prince but ate like a pauper. Expensive restaurant dinners, popular hawker dishes, doughnuts, store-bought pies, pastries, and nicely packaged junk/convenient/pasteurized food (which are also ridiculously altered for manufacturer profit margins). I could spend 3,000 Singapore dollars just on food bills in a single month. At the same time, I visited the cold and fever clinic an average of 3-4 times a year (not bad considering Singapore’s 10-30 day outpatient leave a year!). The interesting thing was that I looked 10 years older than me now.
And now? I spend half of what I used to and eat like a king. I look much younger than 10 years ago. You do not believe ? Come see for yourself! 🙂
