Can a Tingling and Itchy Scalp Mean That Regrowth is Happening After Hair Loss? My Opinion

I get asked this question quite regularly. People really hope that the tugging, tingling, and itching on their scalp means they’re experiencing massive regrowth, but many also know they’ve experienced the same thing when that same hair was sticking out or falling out. The truth is that whenever a large number of hair follicles fall out or grow, you can sometimes experience these same symptoms. These are ways to find out which one is happening, which I will talk about in the next article.

What is the period during which you experience tingling and itching? : One way to help you determine if you are starting to see regrowth is to ask yourself where you are in the hair cycle. Generally speaking, you will start to see new hair around 2 months (more or less) after the onset of hair loss or hair loss. If you experience these symptoms very soon after it first happens, it’s less likely that it’s due to regrowth, as the time frame is happening too soon.

A few ways to tell if what you’re going through is regrowth (or just more shedding along the way 🙂 You probably already know that “burning scalp syndrome” is the name given to scalp problems that often correspond to dramatic hair loss. Many people worry that what they hope is a symptom of regrowth is actually just that scalp burning that persists or gets worse. (And, it’s possible to have the syndrome at the same time your hair is growing back.) But, there are ways to tell which ones and which ones. And, you can often do this just by taking a close look at your hair and scalp.

Start by standing in front of a mirror and pulling your hairline back. You should see a fairly generous amount of baby hairs coming through. They may start out thin and light in color, but they should quickly start to thicken and darken if everything else is normal.

Another thing to try is to slick your hair back. Shine a bright light on your head and see if you can identify any short hairs sticking out between the slicked back strands. (It may help to hold a piece of paper behind you so you can see more easily.) Better yet, spray your hair (on top) with dry shampoo. If you are generous enough when spraying, your hair will turn white. This will make it much easier to see those short hairs growing back.

Finally, you can tilt your head to one side and then comb your hair to the opposite side. Now look near your ear and see if there are any short hairs sticking out and going against the grain. All of these methods should help you identify a new supply of baby hair.

What to look for in healthy new hair that grows smoothly: Like I said, new locks may be lighter in color or look a bit skimpy at first. But once the hair is long enough for you to see easily, it should start to darken and be more normal in width. If you are unsure about this, you can compare one of the new hairs with one of your longer hairs. This will tell you if the diameter is similar.

The reason this is a concern is that you don’t want to see miniaturized regrowth. If you do, this is an indication that you may have androgens that have affected your follicles and your ability to maintain healthy hair and a normal scalp. Generally, the sooner this issue is resolved, the better your results will be. Generally speaking, slightly miniaturized hair responds better to treatment than hair that has been heavily attacked over a longer period.
