Erasing Migraines

Question:

My eight year old son suffers from migraines. The local hospital advised us to remove chocolate, cheese, cola and yeast extract from her diet. We did it immediately, but he still gets a headache about twice a month. Analgesics help, but I wonder if cranial osteopathy would be suitable. He had a traumatic birth, which resulted in a rapid forceps delivery.

Reply:

Migraines usually begin around puberty; they are rare in children. I wonder if your son has headaches instead of migraines. Migraine comes from the words “hemi”, which means half, and “crania”, which means skull, which means that migraines are always one-sided. Atypical migraine, which can be very distressing, lasts more than 24 hours and is accompanied by symptoms such as:

* an aura – visual disturbance preceding an attack

* a premonition – you know the attack is coming

* sensitivity to light or sound, so strong that you want to lock yourself in

*nausea and vomiting.

Your child’s rapid birth and forceps delivery is the most likely cause of his problem, as the skull is often crushed and the neck damaged when the baby’s head passes rapidly through the birth canal. Forceps can also damage the skull and neck. This results in misalignment of the neck vertebrae. When this happens, blood flow to the brain is affected because the spinal arteries, which run through a pair of bony and fibrous canals inside the vertebrae, are crushed. Neck muscles can also contract due to stress and tension, which leads to further restriction of blood flow.

Another potential problem concerns the vital supply of glucose and oxygen to the brain. The brain is bathed in cerebrospinal fluid, which circulates glucose and oxygen. The skull contracts and expands about a dozen times per minute to circulate fluid, but tight neck muscles and misaligned skull bones can disrupt this process. The result is that the brain does not get enough glucose and starts to hurt.

There are several other possible causes of headaches, such as teeth grinding at night. This traumatizes the jaw joints located in front of the ear lodge, and they can become very painful. The pain radiates to the temples and causes a severe headache. Blocked sinuses, which do not necessarily imply a runny nose, can also be the trigger. These are usually felt at the front of the head. They tend to be worse in the morning, and also in the sun.

Other causes include food allergies, dehydration, constipation, low blood pressure, and eye strain due to sight problems. I’m sure your doctor checked them out, as well as the unlikely possibility of a brain tumor. It is also possible to suffer from rebound headaches due to painkillers: the brain likes the painkiller and creates a headache for more.

When your son has had a checkup with your doctor, I suggest the following general treatment:

* Cranial osteopathy is very useful.

* Drink at least six glasses of plain, pure water a day. between meals.

* Eat fresh, healthy foods, preferably organic.

*Avoid citrus fruits, chocolate and sugary foods, cheese, ice cream, soft drinks, Marmite, canned goods and fast food.

*Get your son to lie on his back, then massage the sides of his neck and shoulders with a little Lifestyle Oil for five minutes every other night at bedtime. Then place a towel flat under his head with your hands under his head. Now ask him to breathe slowly and evenly and gently lift his head away from his shoulders. The gentle traction will relieve the headache and help her sleep well.

* Check for blocked sinuses by pressing on the points inside his eyebrows. The pain means the sinuses are congested. Put two drops of sinus oil in each nostril at bedtime.

*Check his jaw joints in front of his ear. If they are tender, massage regularly.

*Make sure he sleeps on a single soft pillow and only spends a short amount of time a day in front of a computer.

*Practice therapeutic yoga with your son, especially the postures of the cobra, the half-bridge and the swing. These are explained in the book Therapeutic Yoga.
