Twenty thousand boys in the desert

No father around to keep them safe

They walk all day and try to sleep at night

The same stars we wish

Life for them is unbearable

Yet the courage that these boys have in them

Never seems to fail

There are men with guns and snakes in the bushes

A lion is ready to feast

The enemy shoots them from the sky

But they bravely continue east

Hundreds of miles they walk

Death threatens everyone

Hope is deep in their hearts

In the middle of the burning sun

After months of war, despair and hunger

They arrive at their destination

Although some have perished along the way

Of disease and starvation

These boys survived a nightmare

They are finally safe

But their battle is far from over

They will forever be haunted by the past

Can they ever trust again

Or will they really be free

Will they ever have a smile on their face

Or know what their story did to me

Will they believe they’re worthy of love

And believe in a god above

Will they know that God led them through

With the power of his love

I pray for each of you

Sudan’s Lost Boys

Let your hearts be free, your spirits high

And proudly you will stand

The Lost Boys of Sudan is a story that will forever be etched in my memory. I think of them every day. I cannot imagine how they survived the violence and harm inflicted on them. 3,800 of these boys came to live in America. They simply yearn to be free, to go to work, and to return home to their families. After reading about them, I found out that 150 of them live in my city. That’s almost 4% of the 3,800. They live in my town of 80,000 people. It’s crazy for me. What drew them here? Is there anyone here who knew the story and felt it in their heart to care for these boys and mentor them? Did God put them near me? I hope one day to meet some of these young men, and I can tell them that I am amazed by their courage and their will to survive. I just pray that they know there are people in the world who care about them and pray for them daily.
