A Loaf Of Bread-What Else Could You Need In Orange County California
I made a lot of bread out of it. I loved venting my frustrations by kneading it. I loved the aroma in my house while cooking. There was nothing better to serve with one of my homemade stews or soups for dinner. My family loved every loaf. They didn’t just like savory, they also liked sweet. Toasting a thick slice with preserves for breakfast was drooling on many cold mornings.
Then they grew up and came out. Making a loaf of bread for my husband and myself is pretty ridiculous. I rarely eat a sandwich and prefer cereal for breakfast. My husband is one of those people who doesn’t eat bread unless it’s hot out of the oven. After that, he considers it stale and won’t touch it again.
Now when soup season comes, I buy a loaf of artisan bread and use what we need and freeze the rest. Here are some of the best I’ve found in Orange County:
Believe it or not-Costco! Especially if our “children” join us. Every day, a shipment of the finest artisan breads from La Brea Bakery is delivered. Our favorite – either rosemary and olive oil or kalamata olive. The only downside, besides having to buy two large loaves, is that you have to be a slicing expert!
Von’s or Pavilion’s also offer wonderful artisan breads in many flavors and textures. What I particularly like about this new “bread bar” is that it will slice breads to your specifications! Thin, thick, whatever, they will fit and adapt. They also have a space to make your own nut butters. So you can really find PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) the old fashioned way!
Panera’s is synonymous with gourmet breads. Tucked away near the Mothers Market in Costa Mesa, this little place has some great produce. The aroma of wonderful baking is truly intoxicating. Worth the trip and the wait – which both times I’ve been there lasted about 15 minutes.
Pacific Whey Baking Company at several locations in the county. Besides the wonderful breads, the breakfasts here are terrific. Personally, my favorite is actually the Chocolate Windmill. Great baked goods no matter what you choose here. Believe me, when you see the display, you will NOT stop at a loaf of bread.
Personally, I didn’t like Boudin Bakery very much, but many people think this place has the best sourdough around. They brag about using a 150 year old starter. Maybe I prefer the sourdough I tried at Vie en France simply because the staff treated me better. You decide.
If you prefer challah, Jewish rye and pumpernickel, look no further than Solomon’s Bakery in Laguna Hills or Katella Bakery in Los Alamitos. Both are made on site and all types are very good.
Remember that bread is the sustenance of life – all the places above know this and are worth taking home one of their loaves and taking a big bite out of it.
