Interstitial Cystitis, Plumb Square And Level
There are several articles explaining what interstitial cystitis (IC) is and the treatments. If you’re reading this article, you know what it’s all about; I will simply say that it is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall, with bladder spasms and sometimes debilitating pain; no definitive medical treatment has been found. It affects both men and women.
There are many alternative treatments that people with this disease have found on their own and they work for them and they get relief. You try them and no relief. The key is “they work for them”. This could be because each person’s chemical makeup is different. It could also explain why not everyone has the same symptoms.
Seven years ago I was walking and suddenly had a tearing pain in my pelvic/groin area. I could barely walk home as the pain was excruciating. I stepped into the hot tub and felt a little relief. A few days later the pain struck again and for a longer period of time; back to the hot tub, again temporary relief.
It was 2 years before I was diagnosed with IC. I was first diagnosed with anal cancer and prolapsed uterus, bladder and rectum. We really thought the pain was from anal cancer. I had surgery, the cancer is gone, the pain is still there.
I did some research and decided that IC might be the problem. My urologist said it was a “hype diagnosis” and he didn’t really believe it. After performing a cystoscopy, he discreetly informed me that my bladder was inflamed and eroded in a few places. He had also taken biopsies to verify that it was not cancer.
Conventional medications did not work. I tried alternative treatments and a strict diet. My main relief was the hot tub and getting an adjustment from the chiropractor. I could no longer train in the gym every day because of the pain. Cranberry juice that worked for urinary tract infections made IC worse.
Another option is to inject Botox into the bladder. It paralyzes the bladder to stop bladder spasms, the source of pain. I did not think of this option, not for me.
Plumb Square and Level as Best Pain Relief
My husband was an entrepreneur and was disabled following a back injury. He always referred to staying Plumb Square and Level as the best pain relief.
I thought about what he said and looked at my posture, definitely not what he would call Plumb Square and Level. I straightened up, returning to the old position of military attention, head held high, shoulders back, stomach and buttocks tucked in. I couldn’t believe the difference, not a cure but a difference.
I also started logging what activity seemed to help, what made it worse, what I ate, and what my system was doing.
My biggest relief is staying in a straight and level position while standing, walking or sitting. I also take a B6 and magnesium every morning. During flares, I can take it every 4 hours. If I am going to do strenuous activity, I will take it before engaging in activity as a preventative.
Keep a diary: write everything down
- Any other medical condition you have
- Foods you eat and drink
- Activity you do
- What makes it worse
- What makes it better
- When do you urinate and how often
- When your pain bursts
Aloe Vera juice
Aloe Vera soothes and calms the mucous membranes. It seems to balance the body and helps reduce bladder inflammation and soothes bladder spasms.
Limit salt and acids
Salt and vinegar are the culprits that cause problems. If your bladder is inflamed and eroded, salt and vinegar won’t help. Think of it like putting salt in an open wound. OUCH!
An acidic body causes many health problems. Try to reduce the amount of acidic products you consume. Try limiting or eliminating different foods and see if that makes a difference.
An emergency measure I would do when nothing else helped was to take ½ teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of water, let sit for a minute, then drink. This would usually begin to decrease bladder spasms after 20 minutes.
Baking soda is sodium, salt, I stopped using it. Plumb Square and Level works in its place. I still sometimes go back to my old posture and will notice the spasms starting. I go Plumb Square and Level and the pain subsides.
Kegel for men and women
Kegel exercises also help, men it is also for you, because they strengthen the bladder.
Ordinary constipation or IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) can cause IC; if the rectum falls or prolapses, it can cause IC. A uterine prolapse or if the uterus rests on the bladder can be the cause.
I have surgery every few months to make sure the cancer hasn’t come back because I refused chemo and radiation. The surgery causes an IC flare. After the surgery, I go to my chiropractor for an adjustment and a cold laser treatment. Cold laser treatment is immediate relief as it heals the inflammation and helps the whole area to heal faster. The cold laser also helps with inflammation of the IC and reduces bladder spasms.
I have a farm and I ride (bounce) on a big tractor and lift over 25 lbs. Both of these things will cause back pain and IC flare-ups. Sometimes it’s painful enough that I have to make an adjustment. My L3-4 to S1-2 move, even the slightest bit, the IC comes into play. These vertebrae house the nerve roots that go to the bladder.
When this happens, I freeze my lower back until I can get in and see my chiropractor; alternate the ice on and off every 30 minutes until the pain subsides.
If I ice my lower back and the pain doesn’t go away and my back doesn’t feel out of place, the next step is heat. I will place a heating pad so I can sit on it and also have it on my lower back. I have another heating pad on my lower stomach and pelvic/groin area. The relief lasts from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the severity of the pain. Another option is to go to a hot tub if you have one.
Whether you’re driving the car, motorcycle, lawnmower, or whatever, try to stay in a straight and level position to minimize problems.
Research shows that lifting weights can cause bladder spasms. Find out what your weight restriction is.
- Square and level upright position to minimize trouble and reduce spasms.
- Slow and deep breathing
- Keep a diary
- Aloe Vera juice to reduce bladder inflammation
- Adjustments and Cold Laser Treatment
- Reduce salt and acid products
- Kegel exercises
- Find your weight restriction and stick to it
- Alternate ice in the lower back for 30 minutes every now and then until the pain is relieved
- Heating pads for sitting, lower back and lower stomach or entering the hot tub
- Try B6 and Magnesium (the best combination I’ve found that works is Formula 303 with Stress plus which has all the Bs. You can buy them online at Earth Turns, I’m not affiliated with them.)
Remember that we all have a different chemical makeup, not all of these substances may work for you. Plumb Square and Level seems to work for everyone I know who has tried it.
You will need to try different treatments, record what you take and what works, and what doesn’t. Ultimately, you’ll need to figure out what works best for your system.
