The Modern Guide To Choosing The Right Bed Sheets
Do you realize that you spend a good third of your life in bed? That’s a lot of time, and knowing that, wouldn’t it make sense to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible while you’re at it? We’ve all slept on sheets that are itchy or so thin you can almost see through them. But a good night’s rest requires a certain level of comfort that simply can’t be achieved with poor quality linens.
Is it time for you to buy new ones?
Size Matters
If you’re over twenty, you’ll remember when beds were only available in standard sizes. You probably had a twin, a double, a queen or a king. But with today’s mattress upgrades, you could have a king-size bed, but standard king-size sheets won’t necessarily fit it. Why? Because mattress manufacturers have made great improvements to mattresses, including things like pillow pleats and extra thickness.
Knowing this, you’ll need to be careful when buying your bed sheets, otherwise you could end up with sheets that don’t quite roll up at the edges, or that do, but continually slip.
Each pack of sheets will provide exact measurements of the sheets, so it’s important that you pay attention to them. Measure your mattress before you go shopping so you’re ready to make a decision. In other words, if you have a queen size bed with a tucked pillow on both sides of the mattress, you may need to purchase king size sheets!
Number of wires
Have you ever had the privilege of sinking into a soft bed and wondering how it was so comfortable? Was it a new type of fabric softener? A perfectly worn mattress? In all likelihood, it was the sheets!
The thread count is what will determine the softness of your sheets – the higher the thread count, the more comfortable your sheets will be. Sometimes called TPI, this factor measures the number of threads used per square inch of fabric. They can vary from around 150 up to thousands. In general, you should always avoid sheets with a count of less than 200, as they will not be pleasant on your skin, but irritated and uncomfortable. If you buy sheets with a thread count above 250, you should get a good night’s sleep.
Material
The type of fabric you select when purchasing your sheets will have a huge impact on your comfort level. And with so many materials available, you should think seriously about the type of sleeping experience you desire. The most popular choices are cotton, flannel, silk and satins.
Cotton is by far the most popular because it’s cozy in the winter and cool in the summer (although they need to be warmed up first in the winter). Sink into a bed with high quality cotton sheets is something! In addition to being comfortable, manufacturers tend to produce them in more styles and colors (than other sheet types) to meet consumer demand.
No winter is complete without warm flannel sheets. Most people exclusively use flannel sheets during the cold months, as they become “sweaty” during the warm months. Additionally, many manufacturers have started producing flannel comforters and blankets to match the patterns of the sheets.
Finally, a pair of silk or satin sheets are considered the height of luxury. They are soft and silky and will keep you from sweating in the summer. You can literally slip into bed and if you have a satin or silk pillowcase, lay your head in pure luxury. The only downside to satin and silk sheets is that they tend to slip off the bed if not fitted properly.
What do you think? Are you a cotton or silk person? Do you want a frivolous thread count, or will 250 be enough? Think carefully about your options before buying bed sheets, then enjoy your choice!
