Birth Control in Light of Islam and Science

Birth control, also known as contraception and fertility control, is a method or device used to prevent pregnancy. Over the past 50 to 60 years, discussions of birth control or population control have grown so much that it has become a topic of discussion on TV, radio, the internet, and every other platform. .

Ahmad and Abu Daoud reported under the authority of Ma’qil Ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) who reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (PSL) and say:

“I have found a woman of rank and beauty, but she does not give birth to children. Should I marry her?” He said no.” He came back to him, but he forbade it. He came to him a third time, and he (the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Marry women who are loving and very prolific, for I will outnumber the peoples next to you.”

This hadith indirectly calls for abstaining from birth control and similar practices.

Consequences of contraceptive methods on the health of the mother

It is scientifically established that the use of contraceptive methods has disastrous consequences on the health of the mother. The female reproductive system controls a group of reproductive hormones secreted by the frontal lobe of the pituitary gland and the ovary. In the normal state, these hormones are produced in measured degrees. Any increase or decrease in it could lead to illness. Therefore, medical scientists agree that all contraceptives negatively affect their users. This is the result of a lot of research conducted in this regard. Some of the disastrous consequences of using contraceptives are:

1. Imbalance of body hormones

2. Weight gain and water retention in the body.

3. Severe inflammation of the female reproductive system.

4. Increased vulnerability to fatal heart attacks for those over thirty, more so for those over forty.

Death of a woman who took contraceptive pills

News agencies once reported the case of a British woman who died from the use of contraceptive tablets. She was using the tablets known as Valdan for eight years before moving on to another known as Mithochlor on medical advice. After a few weeks of change, she fell ill and became bedridden. Later, her health deteriorated and she died.

Lately, it has been established that the use of contraceptives, especially tablets, can lead to certain cases of cancer.

The most balanced advice

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) had wanted to prohibit the breastfeeding of a child if the mother became pregnant if he had not known that the Romans were doing it. Indeed, such breastfeeding could interfere with sucking and inhibit the infant’s growth.

If we thought deeply about this prophetic guidance, we would realize that the space between one pregnancy and another takes three years, especially if we go back to Allah’s statement:

“Mothers will breastfeed their children for two whole years, (that is to say) for those (parents) who desire to complete the term of nursing.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:233)

One would then discover that giving a mother the opportunity to fully recover her health (after the delivery of a child) is something that religion enjoins, as opposed to the absolute prevention of pregnancy by contraceptive methods.

Condition in Muslim and Arab countries

It is strange that most Muslim countries have been carried away by the so-called birth control campaign under the guise of facing economic and social challenges. Huge sums of money that could be used for more useful economic and social projects are earmarked for this campaign. Here it is very important to note that the real problem is not the scarcity of resources but the unequal distribution of resources among people. Today, wealth and resources circulate and concentrate among the wealthy, so that the masses of the people are unable to get what is rightfully theirs.

Classified reports in one of the Arab countries confirm that what is spent on the birth control campaign in a single year in terms of vehicles purchased, doctors and nurses recruited, drugs and other materials procured, operations performed and hospitals used was enough to support more than a million children at a time when the birth rate in this country did not exceed half a million births.

In addition to this, some Muslim countries have projects and work opportunities where there is not enough manpower, which forces these countries to import workers from Asian and European countries to help them carry out their projects.

On the other hand, there are other Muslim countries which are overpopulated but lack sufficient capital to establish projects in which their burgeoning population could find gainful employment. Can’t these countries benefit from the former to promote the brotherhood of humanity? Indeed, human resources are the basis of progress and development if they are well used instead of lamenting that there is not enough potential.

Contraceptive failure rate

The saying of the Prophet in the Hadith, “If Allah wanted to make something exist, nothing can prevent Him from doing so”, is also a perfect miracle that can only be understood by those who have studied contraceptive methods and their percentage of success. . Despite all these different methods, pregnancies still sometimes occur, if Allah (SWT) wishes it and decrees it.

A gynecologist said: ‘A patient came to see me and informed me that she had had a tubal ligation in London and yet found herself pregnant a few months later.’

The failure rate of these contraceptives is 55% if they are barrier and intrauterine methods, and the rate drops to 1% only if they are practiced by means of surgical operations and by a surgeon experimented. However, many researchers still record a failure rate of up to 37% in operations performed by even experienced surgeons. There are even cases of pregnancy after removal of the uterus. Therefore, the noble prophetic hadith is a perfect miracle to establish this scientific fact. And Allah (SWT) knows best.

Some very interesting books which I have found largely in support of the subject discussed above can be found at Darussalam Publishers.
