Well, this article is a brief overview of the SMS language, and it includes some sample text messages, with some popular text message abbreviations (aka SMS dictionary) included as well. And, as you read it, I hope this article on texting enlightens rather than irritates.
Remember, it’s not just on cell phones that this texting language is popping up these days:
*Facebook and Twitter updates are also likely to have shortened phrases which might seem meaningless to many
* Instant messaging software like Skype often see people writing in “txt speak”
* And posts in online forums, where everyone is in such a rush (or people just don’t know any better), are often littered with these so-called text message abbreviations
So while you may be gritting your teeth soon (reading this article on texting), remember that it *helps* know a little bit of this txt lingo…
EXAMPLES OF TEXT MESSAGES
Well, here are some examples of text messages including some classic cell phone abbreviations:
1) My smmr wr CWOT vacation
2) I want 2 go hm ASAP, 2C my M8s again
Believe it or not, these sample text messages are taken from an English essay submitted by a 13-year-old British teenager. At school. Seriously! And their meaning, of course, is…

I could easily create one or two example text messages, removing the vowels and shortening the words as much as possible – lk ths, uc! – but I believe that this authentic SMS example has more educational value.
Yes, that’s how texting is made up – it’s all about word reduction, fewer characters to type (crucial for speed, for example, as well as space on Facebook and Twitter status updates !) But then it comes down to knowing some well-established SMS shortcuts too – no need to reinvent the wheel, I suppose. And that’s where text message abbreviations, otherwise known as the “SMS dictionary,” come in.
Here is a very short example of what I mean:

girlfriend – girlfriend
D8 – date
L8 – late
U – you
LMAO – laugh my ass
MAOI – in my arrogant opinion
IMHO – IMHO
