The Sedentary Lifestyle Vs The Active Lifestyle – An Endomorph’s Perspective

Why is it so easy to be a couch potato and just laze about doing nothing? Let me rephrase this: why is physical activity, especially intense physical activity, perceived as painful? Is perception the main problem? What if we could rewire the neural pathways in our brains to associate pleasure with intense physical activity (I’m not necessarily talking about hard work) and pain with inactivity and physical laziness?

There are several reasons why I bring up such a subject. First, the body type. It has been documented that human beings can be classified physically, based on metabolic rate, among other important factors. These categories are: ectomorph – hyper metabolism; generally of a lean disposition; has trouble building muscle; Endomorph- the opposite of ectomorph, having a slow metabolism; has a predisposition to storing body fat; looks round in appearance; can build muscle quite easily. The mesomorph – this body type is between the ectomorph and the endomorph. The mesomorph has the optimal metabolism; can gain weight easily, unlike the ectomorph, or lose weight quite easily, unlike the endomorph.

When it comes to body type, an endomorph does not have the luxury of living a sedentary life. The endomorph must be physically and mentally active. In addition, the endomorph must be very careful with their diet, unlike their ectomorph and mesomorph counterparts. I speak mainly from my personal experience, as I have experimented with different diets and fitness regimes.

I followed the passive, vegetarian lifestyle, practicing yoga and pilates; nothing intense. Sure, I became flexible and could do handstands, but there was no improvement in my physique as far as cardiovascular fitness was concerned. I’m not quite sure how to explain it, but it’s as if practicing slow, passive exercises diminishes one’s “personal fire”. More on that later. On the lacto-vegetarian lifestyle, I ate lots of carbs, but no animal sources of protein except for eggs and milk. My main source of protein then was soy chunks, soy burgers, soy links and tofu. In hindsight, I’ll only stick to tofu, because the Japanese have used tofu throughout their history, it’s a fermented soy product, compared to other commercial alternatives to soy meat.

With no significant results other than increasing my body’s estrogen supply (which is definitely not good for a guy who considers himself a man), I switched to a more active diet, both in diet and physical activity. I started practicing karate; shotokan karate to be exact. It was twice a week, but boy, this vigorous activity kept oxygen flowing through my body and brain. My diet then included meat, but was limited to fish and chicken; absolutely no pork or beef (this was strictly out of preference). Imagine, just two days of two to three hours of intense, vigorous activity, and my metabolism had already started kicking in.

So, being ambitious, the next step was to increase physical activity, which would result in increased calorie expenditure. This has been done, with interesting results.

In the end, it all comes down to a choice. We all know the benefits of exercising regularly. (We’re not talking about popping into the gym and pretending to exercise; no, we’re talking about the type of exercise to raise your heart rate, which would increase your cardiovascular fitness). But it’s so easy to get distracted and put it off. I used to find excuses. For over 4 years I made excuses saying I would go to the gym the next month. 1 month became 2, then 2 became 4 and so on. Each month that I delayed, I became even more demotivated. I ate more shit. It’s a vicious cycle, because you don’t make the decision to go, and you see physically fit people in the gym, and you use that as a reason not to go.

This is where willpower comes in. You make the decision and you get away with it. You don’t have to do it alone. You can always get motivation from a friend or relative who wants to exercise and lose some extra body fat. Additionally, you can cut out pictures from magazines or print pictures from the Internet of a person (athlete, celebrity, etc.) whose body is the definition of fitness for you. I use images of bodybuilders from the Universal Animal supplement. I also have a poster of this 27 year old bodybuilder named Brandon Curry. Also, I have a photo of sexy fitness models in bikinis, who I would like to date. Believe me, as a guy, a picture of a sexy girl in a bikini, with a flat stomach and a toned midsection makes you want to suck your belly automatically.
