How It All Started!
I’m not saying “hello boys” because I think this is a girls story and you won’t be able to think about our shoes until you wear them, but if you want to read on then welcome the guests. .
Hello girls and boys!
I’m a 27 year old girl who works in a computer industry in a pretty good job, uh, you don’t have to talk so much about yourself, so I’m in an ok position. I own a bicycle, I live in an apartment rented by BHK which I have decorated a lot with girly stuff, mainly in pink and green (my two favorite colors).
I have a lot of friends and four best friends, every weekend we have a blast, sometimes that blast includes record, booze, dance, sometimes it includes cooking the best food we can experimenting at my house or at some of my friends, sometimes putting an outdoor grill on my balcony and at the same time having cold drinks with a feeling of beer (I don’t allow alcohol in my apartment because it leaves a smelly smell behind … it’s yuck) sometimes driving in our bikes without knowing what our destination is, in short there are several sometimes and only one several times and it’s shoooppppinggg! But the saddest thing about all of this is that it only lasts two weeks after our salaries have been credited.
Summing up my life, it was great when one fine day my friend Silvia said:
“I’m getting married”
“WHatttt…you must be kidding”
“Nooo, I’m not, does my face look like a joke, is there a smile you can spot on it?” She looked like a wild cat.
“How, why, when, where…” I was so confused.
“There’s a guy, he’s an NRI, my family knows his family well, he’s going to the US next month so his parents want him to get married before he leaves, and now it’s me they chose… bingo, I’m the luckiest girl of the millennial”
I was so confused I couldn’t figure out her bingo and luckiest millennial girl meant “Pull, I’m screwed” or did she really feel lucky. Then it took me a few seconds to understand and you too don’t worry!
“But he’s leaving next month, how are you going to marry him in a month”
“Oh yeah, that’s something you were thinking and I didn’t” she roared like a tigress.
“Okay, calm down honey, what are your parents thinking”
“They’ve gone crazy, if they could, they’ll marry me tomorrow”
Now tell me, what can you say to a girl when she says something like that, please keep in mind that she was holding a disposable glass full of tea, which we call here in Bangalore a teacup full and she hasn’t even taken a sip yet.
“Hmm..” I couldn’t hmm long, I had to say something, she was waiting for my inputs, but I had to think and speak after all, she had a full cup of tea in her hand. Where the hell are my other friends…
Say something, say anything, go ahead think of something, you have such a big head you can’t think of a sensible word other than hmm.
“Hmmmm..” I repeated, this time it was a bit longer.
Dear don’t laugh, it’s a natural phenomenon, in a crisis situation, the brain stops working.
“What are you doing hmmm… This is the decision of my life, I can’t make it in minutes or hours, I got to know this guy”
“Yeah…why don’t you talk to that guy once, you’ll get to know him”
“Ohh please even a sex addict will also be nice to you when you first talk to him”
“I’m damn sure he won’t be addicted to sex, your parents know him na”
“I’m not saying he’s a sex addict, OMG, what if he was?” she panicked.
“Would you like me to bring you a soda or something, because it’s too hot in here, I don’t think tea is a good idea at this time of day” I said swallowing my own saliva.
“Yes please, thank you very much” she said throwing the cup full of tea straight into the trash can without even getting up.
“Relax, baby…I’m sure he’d be a very nice guy. After all, he’s going to be your husband,” I said with a very big, flattering smile on my face.
“You think?” she said with eyes of pity.
“Ohh baby, definitely… talk to him once”
“Hey wait a sec, if he’s traveling next month to the US, then what about you” I said again, but I don’t know why I had to say that, for the first time in the evening, she calmed down and boom… I lit the fire again…
“Yeah…exactly…and you know his parents have the solution for that too. You wanna know what it is, the solution is I’ll take a transfer from here to Chandigarh and stay with his parents while he’s in the U.S. I’m going to apply for a dependent visa and once it’s approved I’ll have to quit my job and go live with him, cook for him, sweep for him, and I’m sure he’ll sleep with him too. You know what a visa entitlement addict is…I won’t get a work permit, which means I’ll be out of a job, totally out of a job…” she was going crazy .
“Breathe… calm down, everything will be fine… calm down”
“Your parents must have thought about all this, why don’t you talk to them first?” I repeated.
“They want me to get married…am I such a burden to them…” and now she was crying. I was feeling bad.
“Come on honey, let’s go to my room”
We were about to leave when two of my friends arrived, their timing was just perfect like Bollywood movie cops, after the show was over.
“Hey… what happened, why are you crying” Joe said.
“It’s a long story, let’s go to my apartment and talk” I said.
We drove to my apartment which is on the fourth floor and the elevator was under maintenance. Silvia had therefore stopped crying during the trip from the ground floor to the fourth floor by stairs.
When I opened my apartment, my two other friends, the most vicious characters, rushed to occupy the most inflated beanbags, leaving behind two, of which one agreed to sit and the other was a mini bean bag which I got for free when I bought the other three large ones.
I, being the most generous host and also a guest of the evening, offered Silvia to sit on the taller one and sit on the smaller one somehow adjusting my but.
“So what’s the big story?” said Addi, another friend of mine.
“Did someone steal her jeans off the patio again while she was keeping them to dry after washing,” Joe teased.
“Guys it’s serious, Sil is getting married” I said
“What…” they both said together.
I told the whole story and first they were like ‘Hawww’ then ‘hmmm’ then actually nothing after giving both of their reactions they just kept nodding.
“I have an idea, why doesn’t Sil call this guy right away from here?” Joe burst out.
“Whoa whoa…shouldn’t her parents know before she calls him,” Addi said worriedly.
“Okay, Sil, go ahead, tell your parents you’re going to call him now just because you need to know the guy you’re marrying” Joe said as if she was going to call Sil’s parents if she didn’t. not.
“Don’t you think she should wait for the guy to call first, won’t she appear too desperate if she calls him first,” Addi said again.
“Baby, she’s only thirty days old and if you exclude today, she only has twenty-nine days left, so do you really think she has time to waste thinking about who’s desperate and who doesn’t? isn’t” I was so pissed off.
“I’m going to call her now, where is my phone, give me my phone” Silvia panicked.
“Easy, easy cat…call your parents first and then call him. Talk nice and please don’t panic” I said, I was actually worried, because she was acting pretty damn crazy.
She took her cell phone and headed for the terrace.
In the meantime, we decided to make pepper chicken for dinner, but for now we stuck to tea and snacks.
The three of us started chatting, first with arranged marriages, then we complained about our managers, we gradually moved into the scope of different technologies, current openings, hikes and usual daily stuff, when our drama queen returned from the terrace after about two hours, yes two hours!
She came back with a very, very big smile on her face and yes, unlikely to her behavior, she was blushing too.
“Oye hoye, what happened, you seem so happy” I said.
“Girls, he’s pretty cute and understanding too. I liked him. He listened to my aspirations; he even said he was going to get me a work permit so I could get a job there too “
“Honey, isn’t he a sex addict?” I said with a smirk on my face.
“Ohh, shut up, he’s too cute to be that”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the beautiful moment when we lost our friend!
She used to be with us with her cell phone constantly beeping, less need to explain who beeped her.
Twenty-five days later, we were attending one of our best friends’ wedding ceremonies. Believe me, these last twenty-five days have not been easy. We bought sarees, embroidered suits (very embroidered yeah very, some even had gold work, some you can’t even look straight at, you had to have sunglasses to look at, well, I won’t denial some were nice which even made me think about getting married, but only a few seconds no more than that!)
Oh! I forgot to buy shoes, bags, makeup bag (these things are so expensive, this velvety little toiletry box cost her ten thousand dollars, damn, what can we apply on barely seven inches of face for ten thousand dollars!) and how can I forget the lingerie (buying them was fun).
On March 8, 2014, our friend got married. We became three from four. Although there is no bridesmaid culture in Punjabi families or ours, we were still self-proclaimed three bridesmaids dressed the same in different colors.
It was my first time going to a wedding where I wasn’t just going to eat or comment on the bride and groom, it was my friend’s wedding. She looked like a princess yeah a princess loaded with gold!
“Do you believe that our Sil is married?” ” I said.
“I still don’t believe she won’t be walking around town with us anymore, she won’t be around for roadside tea, shopping with us, making her rajma chawal” Joe fumed and did we.
We hugged and committed, no matter who we marry or where we go, we will always be in touch.
“You know what, Silvia is too brave to fall into marriage so soon. I’ll never get married so soon, I need time” I said.
But girls, it’s very common to say “Never say never” and the moment I said it, somehow somewhere in the universe there were collisions of meteors, with huge lightning, some of the planets stopped for a few seconds, they changed their routes and finally my so made my DESTINY. Yeah my fate has been twisted, twisted as hell!
