The Best Computer Equipment for Day Trading E-Mini Futures
I sometimes get questions about what hardware I would recommend for e-mini day trading futures. They come from my regular customers and some prospects. Just recently I received a question along these lines, but this time it was about a laptop and a trading platform.
I thought I might as well address this issue here, if only so many others with similar questions can benefit. In a nutshell, it is the question of hardware and software for day trading e-mini futures. I will try to approach it in the most basic way thinking about beginners.
First off, I really don’t recommend a laptop for e-mini day trading futures.
You need a bigger screen than even the biggest laptops can offer. You can easily get an inexpensive 20-inch monitor these days, something most laptops won’t be able to beat anytime soon. And 20 inches is a relatively small size for a desktop monitor these days. You can also choose to connect more than one monitor to your machine. Many traders opt for such a solution. When I was starting out as a day trader I used 3 monitors, the biggest one was a 21 inch beast, too heavy to even get rid of now so it just hangs around my house with other monitors and old computers , only some of which remain functional.
These days I really don’t need more than one monitor, but I may use two when upgrading my desktop in the near future.
As far as desktops go, what you want to get is a computer with the following parameters, which aren’t that hard to meet as of late 2015, and many relatively inexpensive machines meet them quite easily .
Here are those settings.
Processor (CPU): at least 3.5 GHz,
RAM: at least 8 GB,
Hard disk: at least 1 TB.
As for the operating system, I think Windows 7 is a better, more stable, less radical operating system than Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, but for many Windows 8 computers, it can be as good as those running Windows 7 and if you feel comfortable with Windows 8, there’s probably no need to opt for one of the Windows 7 desktops that are less available these days.
However, Windows 10 computers are slowly coming to market these days, so you can choose one if you are a bit more tech-savvy. If not, you might want to wait until 2016 when all major blemishes are fixed, or until Service Pack 1 (the first major update) is released, which I would also wait for in 2016.
Desktop computers with the parameters mentioned above are regularly offered by Hewlett-Packard or Dell, and many other lesser-known computer manufacturers, and you can buy them locally or on Amazon.com or an online outlet. similar line.
Now let’s talk about trading software, i.e. charting and trading platforms.
The trading platform is something you usually subscribe to on a monthly basis and it depends on the broker you choose. Most e-mini brokers offer more than one trading platform, although some platforms may be limited to just one broker, as is the case with Bracket Trader, for example. You also often need to subscribe to charting software, which may not be the same as your trading platform. Amibroker, which is just a charting software, is an exception here in that it is not subscription-based. There are others too, usually much more expensive if you decide to buy a lifetime license, although they usually also offer monthly or quarterly subscriptions. MultiCharts or NinjaTrader are good examples in this regard.
I trade through Interactive Brokers. They offer good commissions, but their margins are not among the lowest and you need to deposit $10,000 to open an account with them, so you can choose another broker. Check ninjatrader.com and sierrachart.com to see which brokers support these platforms. Both are trading and charting platforms and I suggest you choose one or the other.
I use Sierra Chart for my charting and Bracket Trader for my trading. Bracket Trader only works with Interactive Brokers, but it’s only $100 (lifetime one-time payment) compared to NinjaTrader’s $60 per month. If you choose Interactive Brokers, I recommend these two software packages as the most profitable combination.
