Is Absent-Mindedness Affecting Your Success?

A few weeks ago, my husband and I took our seven children to a neighboring state for a read marathon. On the way back we stopped halfway and stayed with my sister for one night to break up the trip. The next morning, in our rush to get back on the road, we gathered up our blankets and pillows, said our goodbyes, and loaded the van. My husband was driving and I looked back to ask the kids, “Do we have everyone?”

No one said otherwise, so I said, “Awesome!

We had just started driving down the road when I looked back and noticed my 15 year old son was missing.

Oh, no, I thought, not Nathan! He’s the one we forgot the last time!

So I exclaimed, “Honey, hurry up! Back up and I’ll be right back before he realizes we’ve almost forgotten about him again!”

Within a minute, I was back inside the house. Hearing Nathan upstairs, I breathed a sigh of relief. Phew! He didn’t notice.

My sister’s husband had a questioning look on his face, so I just said softly, “We forgot about Nathan…don’t say anything.”

Shortly after, Nathan opened the door so I nonchalantly shouted, “Nathan…it’s time to go!”

He ran downstairs, said goodbye, and we got into the van. Just as we were preparing to pull away, someone in the back said, “Where’s Nicholas?”

We gasped. How did we miss Nicholas?

So I asked, “Nathan, are you going to find Nicholas?”

“Safe.” Nathan said, then ran home.

Pretty soon he came out — not Nathan — but my brother-in-law. Standing in his dressing gown, hands outstretched and eyes wide, he gestured, “What the –?”

Laughing, we saw him disappear into the house. Then suddenly, he steps through the doorway again with a look of complete disbelief, and three fingers raised.

What’s that supposed to mean? We asked ourselves.

Just then, Nathan came out of the house with Nicholas…

… AND Bethany.

Well, in my defense, I will be say we were driving a 15 passenger van full of blankets, pillows and backpacks. Most of the time, you can’t see everyone in their place even when they ARE there. When you rely on a child to let you know that their buddy is missing, but that child is also missing… well, you see what can happen.

Did you know you can leave three kids behind without even realizing it?

I’m doing it now.

It reminded me of the family that stopped at a gas station on a long road trip, then realized a few hours later that the mother had left her prescription glasses there. Unfortunately, they had to turn around and come back for them, which cost them a lot of extra time and gas. When they arrived, they found their son was also waiting.

This type of distraction can be very costly in terms of time, resources, and most importantly, damaged relationships.

In my case, I thought we were ready to go, but I was wrong. The extra clutter in the van and my haste distracted me from the indicators (empty seats) that would have told us exactly what we needed to do next (find our kids), before leaving. If we had proceeded anyway, without fixing the immediate problem, it could have cost us extra time, gas and, again, most importantly, potentially damaged relationships.

So how do you avoid distractions? Maybe it’s just a matter of addressing the clutter. Too much clutter in life can distract us from subtle indicators that would clearly tell us exactly what we really need to do next in our journey towards the desired goal.

What are you trying to accomplish?

  • Financial freedom?
  • Stronger family relationships?
  • Better health?
  • Peace of mind?
  • A sense of accomplishment?

There may be something critical that you don’t even think about…something urgent and important that you need to do first.

If the mess of life keeps you from recognizing it, one day you may need to turn around and return to this place to fix what has been neglected at this time. There are subtle indicators ready to grab your attention, but you may need to slow down and clear some clutter before you notice them.

So… what kind of “clutter” can become a distraction from the subtle indicators?

“Congestion” may include:

  • Too many unnecessary activities fill your day (life is short – be selective about how you spend your time!)
  • Too many useless things lying around your house or office (things were created to be used, to benefit people – if you no longer benefit from owning an item, transfer it to someone who will use.)
  • Too many meaningless conversations (are your conversations focused on the topic of things, other people, or uplifting ideas?)
  • Too many meaningless non-family relationships (is there a positive exchange of services, knowledge, or values going on…or not?)

If you’re caught up in the clutter and missing the subtle (but otherwise so obvious) indicators that something else is an urgent priority (like a child being left behind), at some point you may need to go back and fix things before you can arrive at your desired destination with all the good bits and pieces intact.

So here is my invitation: take inventory of your life. Where are you trying to go?

Are your activities, conversations, objects, and non-family relationships really making the necessary contribution to your journey? Erase what you can, then take a look around. You might find a gaping hole right under your nose that needs your immediate attention now. Address it now and you will successfully arrive at your destination much faster.

(And, if you’ve ever lost track of a child like we did, don’t feel too bad…there’s even evidence it’s happened to some of the most famous and popular parents. of history: Joseph and Mary, when Jesus was 12 years old, two thousand years ago.)
