Warhammer – The Beginners Guide to Rogue Trader and Collecting Warhammer

Early years of Rogue Trader:

The rulebook written by Rick Priestley for the game Warhammer 40000, Rogue Trader was published in 1987, this first issue is massively different from all future issues. It’s mostly a cross between RPGs and classic tabletop games, rather than a pure tabletop fighting game. Rogue Trader had more in-depth information and insight into the wider expanses of the 40K universe, its races and their technologies unlike later editions of the game, to me that’s why it’s considered a piece of prized collection and holds a special place in my collection.

This rulebook is considered to be much less rigid in 40K rules than later editions, as it used a much broader set of views in storytelling than was common in future versions and easily encouraged mixed faction forces .

Jokero, Slann, Squats, Zoats are examples of races that were not included in the first edition of RT.

Rogue Trader had six sections:

  • fighting rules,
  • Scenario for Crimson Fist Space Marines fighting Orks on Rynn’s World,
  • A Material section.
  • Background section
  • Special rules for advanced players,
  • A summary including all the graphics in the book.

Some scenery elements (bolters, Dreadnought armor) can be seen in a wargaming ruleset called Laserburn written by Bryan Ansell and produced by Tabletop Games in 1980. The influence of these can also be seen in the prototype mechanics game Necromunda.

My interest in Rogue Trader

When I came across Games Workshop products in the late 80s, it was the Rogue Trader miniatures that caught my eye. Rick Priestley really did a number in my life! When I first started modeling I used to build and paint my own main models, usually British Redcoats, Prussians and Napoleonic forces etc.

Then one day I bought a fantasy figure pack of Ral Partha and started down the fantasy road, but it wasn’t until 1987 with the arrival of Rogue Trader that I found something that would take a lot of time, effort and of course money and that was good old man’s Imperium – (Rick Priestley wrote Rogue Traders as independent explorers employed by the Imperium to research planets outside the established borders) and all the horrible creatures you had to fight. Although in the beginning there was no sign of Chaos, well not like there is today – of course Preistley alludes to the forces of the Warp (Chaos), but that’s only when certain expansions are exits that we saw the full might of the forces of Chaos coming through.

The pride of my collection was a complete army of Imperial Space Marines, lovingly built and painted over many years. Then again I also had a fantastic collection of Zoats, Space Slann, Imperial Guard, oh the list is truly endless!

After a few years I moved in with my future wife and had our first son, gambling suddenly became less and less important, working and paying the bills seemed to occupy every moment of my life (even when I was going through Uni I had managed to balance the game with real life, but having kids is really a whole different ball game 🙂

So, over the next decade, my beloved collections were lost or broken as we bought our homes and moved due to careers, and sadly, I finally stopped playing!

Then jump forward to 2001 and a football injury had me up at home for 6 months and down and behold I started buying 40K models from the local GW store. In the years that followed, I started to really appreciate the work of the Rouge Trader models (today’s models are definitely more sculpted/ornate and really pleasing to the eye). I missed the simplicity of those early designs – maybe they had the pink eyes and bags of nostalgia I remembered but all of a sudden I wanted to find my lost collections!

Boy!!! Was that easier said than done, since Games Workshop took all the RT stuff out of production and broke most of the molds, I was struggling to find them BUT luckily the web was really starting to reach its potential and I could start finding clubs and websites where I could talk to other like-minded people and of course EBAY :)) Now I know it has knockers and cons but that was the number 1 stop for me finding many of my lost minis BUT it was a nightmare of auctions shilling, sniping, buyers backing out of sales as auction didn’t reach what they wanted, numbers lost or broken by post office, etc.

Alas there are now a multitude of places to find your old miniatures 🙂
