Getting Rid of Lice Starts With Making Sure Everybody Else is Safe
If you notice red welts starting from your child’s scalp and moving towards the back of the neck, your child may have head lice. Another noticeable trait is when your child keeps scratching his head.
Using a lice comb can correctly determine if your child has a head lice infestation. Carefully inspect each section of your child’s hair. Make sure you don’t get infected too or you’ll get rid of head lice too. Use gloves and cover your head. The room you are working in should be free from even light breezes, as lice are carried away by the breeze.
There is a risk of infestation if you find plump, sand-like nits in your child’s hair and will definitely require medical treatment. Nits or dead husks are much easier to handle and can be treated with some home remedies.
Once your child is confirmed to have head lice, it is prudent to have your entire family checked as well, just to be sure. Do not remove lice with your hands. If you must do this, be sure to wear gloves, as small lice are likely to attach themselves under your fingernails and you will hardly notice these tiny parasites.
There are many methods to get rid of these pesky parasites. Over-the-counter medications are one such way to control head lice. There are a number of things you can buy at the pharmacy like pesticidal shampoos and anti-lice hair lotions or anti-lice creams. These products contain permethrin and pyrethrin ingredients that actively prevent lice from breeding by killing them. Some of these products contain harmful chemicals and should never be used on children under the age of two. Also check if your child is allergic to these products before using them.
If your child is allergic, some home remedies are highly recommended. Conditioners for thick hair or olive oil or mayonnaise or creams for heavy hair can be applied to your child’s head and left on for about two hours. Then, using an anti-lice shampoo, rinse the hair thoroughly and comb out the dead lice and nits. A good lice comb with fine teeth that will cut through the length of the hair, easily removing dead lice and nits is definitely better than your regular comb.
After checking your whole family for head lice, make sure they don’t share anything with your child. For example, towels, clothes, and sheets can contain plump nits, and you might not even notice them because they’re so small.
Finally, disinfect your home and be sure to get rid of dirt and anything else that could transmit lice from head to head, even though lice are attracted to clean, silky hair. For the record, it might interest you to know that a female louse can lay up to 150 eggs in her lifetime. It’s just one. Imagine what a bunch of lice can do.
