There’s nothing quite like a good sugar cookie recipe. Don’t buy the roll of Pillsbury Dough, you can make a great cookie that will remind you of when Grandma made them.

Grandma used to sit by the fire and drink her tea and Grandpa used to sip his coffee made from his French press, before it was fashionable. I loved seeing them sitting there enjoying the day. When we entered the house there were smells coming from the kitchen that you just couldn’t imagine. The sweet smell of warm sugar cookies invaded your senses. You knew today was going to be a treat.

It was a tradition we enjoy every year. The kitchen was filled with flour storms and the counters were sticky from buttercream frosting. We had tin cookie cutters spread all over the table. I preferred the boot, my sister liked the angel.

Grandma had a special way with these cookies and she passed on the recipe to me. I had to teach my kids how to make these wonderful holiday treats. It wouldn’t be Christmas time without this Yummy cookie recipe.

I’m posting this because I want you to enjoy the best sugar cookie recipe ever.

Grandma’s Favorite Sugar Cookie

1 cup white sugar

1 cup powdered sugar

1 cup butter

2 beaten eggs

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

4 cups flour

½ cup corn oil

Cream the sugars and butter together. Combine beaten eggs, vanilla and corn oil. Add the dry ingredients. Mix all ingredients well and refrigerate overnight.

Bake at 375 F for 8-10 minutes…DO NOT OVERBAKE.

We used to make the funniest colors to decorate the cookies, most of them looked inedible. They tasted divine, though. We figured that if we made them rude enough, the adults would leave them alone. We were wrong. Everyone knew these were Grandma’s famous sugar cookies from her cookbook. This page was splashed with all kinds of colors. I have this book now. I love making these cookies with my kids.

Grandma’s favorite frosting (don’t forget the food coloring)

2 cups powdered sugar

½ cup melted butter

1 ½ cups milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream sugar, butter and vanilla. Add a small amount of milk (1-2 tablespoons). Beat until frothy. If the icing is too sweet add a little milk.
