Ableton Live How to – Use Ableton to Get the Perfect Kick Drum

When it comes to creating beats in Ableton Live, or any other software for that matter, people often struggle to get the really heavy sound you tend to hear in professionally produced music.

It can be a combination of several things, but it usually comes down to a lack of knowledge when it comes to grooming your sounds and giving them space in the mix.

It’s often helpful to remember that it’s harder to get really clean, fat bass sounds using software than using a decent drum machine, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be does.

So what do you need to consider when kicking and how do you achieve a body-shaking sound on a big PA system?

The first thing you need to think about is whether you want the kick drum or your bass line to carry the bulk of the low end energy. To get the results you want, you really need to start thinking about where each part of your track is in the mix.

This is set by using EQs to give space in the mix for each part of the track. This sort of thing scares a lot of people because it’s considered very technical, but it doesn’t have to take long as long as you have a good ear and work methodically. We’ll talk more about equalization in another article. For now, we’ll focus on the bass drum itself.

Let’s assume for this example that your kick will provide the low end energy.

Now, with the drum kits you get with Ableton Live, drum plugins, and easy-to-find samples, you can take many different approaches.

You have to take into account that all of these types of things have been played to death and making your original kick can be tricky. So here’s what I would do…

I highly recommend that you start creating your own kick sound by layering 2 or more different kicks with another high end noise to give the slam.

To do this on Ableton, open a drum rack and select your first kick sample. Since the kick will have the low end I would recommend grabbing an 808 kick sample as they are very deep and have solid bass.

Then take an auto filter and use a low pass filter to remove the mid and high end sound. This will leave you with a nice strong low end for your new kick.

Next, get another kick drum, but this time look for one that has a nice mid-range sound. (Maybe a live bass drum or whatever you can find.

Use one of Ableton’s automatic filters again, but this time use a bandpass filter. Bandpass filters allow you to cut low and high frequencies at the same time. Be sure to remove the low end as the earlier 808 sample will carry it for you.

Leave as much high as you want, that part is up to you. It can be tweaked later to fine-tune your kick sound, but remove some of the high end. You’ll fill that gap in a minute.

Finally, you want to grab something with a sharp top end. You can use a snare, hi-hat, clapperboard, just about anything with a high frequency.

Again stick a filter on it and this time use a high pass filter to leave just the high end “snap”

Now just play those three samples at the same time and start tweaking the filters until you get a sound you like. This ensures that you will have an original sound.

It is important when creating your kick that you use the filters to give each of the three samples their own place in the mix. You don’t want them to intersect too much. Remember that you are simply creating a kick from the three separate samples.

When using a Drum Rack in Ableton Live, each individual sample in the rack is stored in a simpler rack so you can make further changes to each of the three samples individually.

I highly recommend going into each sound and adjusting the filter frequency and resonance using the simpler control knobs. You can change sounds beyond recognition and get really creative.

Remember that your bass drum will play for most of the song, so the more time you spend here, the better. Do justice to your track and put time where it counts!
