Tornado Hits Idaho: Spuds Still Okay
Yesterday we were driving through Hagerman, Idaho after visiting our grandchildren in Seattle. We have a set of triplets up there plus their 4 year old sister. The two boys think they are Stuka pilots.

The Stuka was the most famous of all aircraft used by the Germans as a sturzkamfflugzeug (dive bomber).
The Stuka was designed strictly as an army cooperation dive bomber at the request of General Ernst Udet. It is instantly recognizable with its inverted gull wings and fixed undercarriage. The Ju 87 was ugly, rugged, accurate, but very vulnerable to enemy fighters.
The Germans learned in the Battle of Britain that its use required air superiority. It was too slow, unwieldy and under-armed, but its effectiveness in destroying vehicles, fortifications or ships, or simply scaring people, was unquestionable. Its accuracy was high during a full dive of up to 80 degrees.
Once the bomb was dropped, it used an automatic pull system to ensure the aircraft emerged from the dive even if the pilot passed out due to high g-forces.
The Germans fitted the wheel covers with sirens which were used once the planes were dived to break the morale of enemy troops and civilians.
They also fitted whistles to the fins of the bombs to ensure recipients knew exactly when the bombs had been dropped and could follow them downhill.
As the article says, the Ju 87 scared everyone. That’s what my 19-month-old grandsons do to me when they climb to the highest altitudes and then dive into my lap, or the ground if they’re missing. My grandsons don’t have the sirens or the automatic traction system. The screams you hear are from Grandma, not sirens.
Back to Hagerman.
Hagerman is a small town on the Snake River. The area is known as Idaho’s “Banana Belt” because it can get a little warmer there in the winter.
Driving through town at 25 miles per hour, we didn’t notice anything was different. Maybe a tree here or there but we didn’t see it. It certainly didn’t sound like a tornado that had buzzed through there the night before.
We learned at the grocery store where we stopped before returning home that indeed a tornado had hit Hagerman.
We bought a newspaper and watched the news.
Why, he had been hit.
A few trees were down and a garage was smashed and scattered here and there. But we lived in Iowa for eight (8) years and weren’t impressed. A TV meteorologist examined the damage and said it looked like a 60 mile per hour wind. It was a class zero tornado, with 5 being the highest.
The TV news station said Idaho gets about 5 tornadoes each year, but no one ever sees them. They land in the mountains or in the boonies somewhere and only the rattlesnakes have good eyesight. So having a shot near people was really exciting.
A family filmed. Sure enough, the clouds were close to a tornado pattern, but not in the perfect patterns we’ve grown accustomed to in Iowa. The vortex was there and the wind and hail were driving things up, including the family member who thought it was fun to be outside in the storm.
I didn’t know how to spell “hail”, there are so many ways, so I shoved the word into Google search. There I learned that greet is mentioned in the Bible:
