The Rules of the Reader

Nicholas held Mackenzie’s hand as they headed for the door. Looking back to make sure their mom wasn’t too far behind, he grinned from ear to ear.

“It’s her first time, mom.”

“I know, Nick, I want you to sit with her, okay?”

“Ok mom.”

As the door opened, Mackenzie’s blonde hair flew in front of her eyes. Nick reached out and brushed his eyes with his free hand. He led her to the counter and they waited their turn. As he shifted his weight from one leg to the other, his excitement mounted. Two more people and he would be at the counter.

He turned back to his mother who was sitting at a distant table. Whispering to his sister, “OK, now you have to be quiet until it’s time not to be quiet, okay?” These are the rules.

“What?”

“Kenzie, you need to be quiet until it’s time not to be quiet. You’ll know when it’s time.”

Mackenzie had just turned three last week, and that was the age you had to be to come here. Every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., all year round.

“Nicolas? »

He turned back to the counter and said simply “Red, please.”

“Oh, we’re out of red, honey. We’ve got some yellow and blue left.”

Mackenzie said “yellow – yellow”.

Nicholas nodded to the lady and she handed him a yellow pillow that was almost as tall as he was. At five, he had been coming for almost two years. He held the pillow above his head as he walked over to the large rug on the left side of the bookcase.

Whispering to Mackenzie to follow him, he showed how tall he was by manhandling the pillow. When he reached an empty space on the carpet, he dropped the pillow on the floor. Motioning aside for Mackenzie, as soon as she was seated, he sat down next to her. He put his fingers to his lips to remind her to shut up.

Soon all the children were seated. They looked at the clock hanging on the wall as if to hurry time. At 1:30 a.m. – they all looked towards the door. Hear the door swoosh as it opens; they were all squirming in their seats. Each of the children stared at him as they saw him walking towards them.

Just five-foot-three and 87, he slowly made his way to the area of the library where the children were gathered. Using his cane to greet the library staff, he walked over to the children. The green backpack he was carrying was filled with books and other goodies for the afternoon activity.

The voice coming from him was just amazing. It was deep and throaty when it started. But as Nicholas had once told his mother, “He’s got a million voices.” He took off his backpack and sat down on the hard-backed swivel stool the workers had placed in the center of the circle of children.

“Hello, kids,” was all he said as he turned around.

The children burst out laughing.

He opened his backpack and took out a book. He held it up for the children to see the pictures and turned around on the stool again. He would spin throughout the story.

“The farmer went into the barn and picked up the hay to feed the dairy cow.”

As soon as the word “cow” left his lips, the children began a chorus of “Moo, Moo, Moo.”

Once they stopped mooing, he continued in a high pitched voice. “Dad, come back to the house, breakfast is almost ready.”

“When the barn door slammed,”

“Bang, boom, boom” cried the children.

“He entered the front yard and closed the door.”

“Squeal, squeal, squeal” was the children’s choir.

The more he read, the more the children responded.

As “The Reader” came to the end of the book and closed it, the children were all shouting in unison.

“The end.”

He nodded and used his cane to point at Mackenzie, “Is this your first time, punkin?”

Mackenzie nodded.

“Did you have fun?”

Mackenzie nodded.

He motioned for her to approach him and looked for his mother. Once the mother nodded, he hugged little Mackenzie, “You’re coming back, okay?”

“Uh-huh”

With that, “The Reader” headed for the door and the children stayed on their pillows until he was gone.

These were the rules.
