Head Lice – New Treatment For the Age Old Problem of Head Lice Infestation

Fortune truly shines on the parent who has never had to experience the disgusting but all-too-common battle with head lice.

Not only are head lice gross, they are difficult to get rid of. Over the years, lice have continued to survive on children’s heads as easily as the common housefly continues to be a pest at summer picnics.

The difference is… houseflies don’t stick. Lice are able to take hold quickly and multiply before the parent or child even notices it. Once your youngster starts complaining of an itchy scalp, be prepared for a long battle to accomplish complete extermination.

Surprisingly little research has been done to expand effective eradication methods.

The 2 most common treatments, although there are many variations, are plucking or choking. The selection method is slow and tedious, not to mention crude, as each sticky nit (lice eggs) and fast little critter is pursued and destroyed with a special comb or determined tweezers holding the parent.

The choking method involves coating the hair and scalp with an organic concoction or chemical. Due to the sneaky low ability of lice to develop genetically transmitted resistance to these treatments, it may take several attempts and an interesting mix of several often toxic concoctions to finally end the lice’s life.

Either way, both methods are tedious and require a significant amount of patience from both parent and child.

But now it seems the tables are turning around these little bad guys.

A drug known as ivermectin, which until now has been used to eradicate internal parasites (such as roundworms), is now being tested to provide a systemic remedy for lice infestation.

The first test as presented in The New England Journal of Medicine looks promising. 398 children with confirmed cases of head lice received the drug with a fake cream. Another 414 were given a placebo pill along with a legitimate head lice cream.

The first results were exciting. Children who received the real pill; 95% were lice free while only 85% of children who received the lice cream were successful. In both test groups, the study reported some side effects (nausea and rash) in a few of the children using both the cream and the pill.

Don’t run to the local pharmacy just yet, though, as further testing is needed to be certain that all aspects of pill application will be safe for children, as well as the dosage for ages and stages of child development. It could take up to five years before FDA approval.

It is time that new, simpler methods of treating head lice were investigated.

For any parent who has had to go through the embarrassing and frustrating process of removing head lice from a family member, a pill would be a long overdue improvement.

Certainly not as big as a painless mammogram, but it’s close behind.
