The Art of Home Made Soap Making
Never in a million years would I have thought that making soap from scratch could be so fulfilling. I don’t remember why I decided to try it, but I do remember being a mother of three young children. I was a stay-at-home mom and when my two eldest went to school, I put my little girl to bed for a nap, then I started my job.
Making soap from scratch was done by combining fat, lye and water. That was it, 3 basic ingredients. When I first tried it, I was flabbergasted by the results of the specification.
I bet you are wondering what saponification means, well it is a chemical reaction between fat and lye with water being the catalyst.
Don’t consider making homemade soap unless you buy safety glasses, gloves, protective clothing, which is essential. Also buy a “How to Make Soap From Scratch” book and read all the safety measures and precautions first. What I share with you are years of experience.
Lye is a base, so it is caustic. You should have a bottle full of vinegar on hand to neutralize any skin contact with the lye. The vinegar neutralizes the caustic reaction. Do not neutralize with water, it will only aggravate the injury. Never add water to lye, always add lye to water.
That’s what I did. I wanted my first soap making experience to be true to the book. I followed the recipe word for word. After years of making soap, I was able to start making my own recipes. It is therefore an article to share with you very interesting results.
The best soap in my opinion is beef tallow soap. Pure white beef tallow has no smell. I usually freeze it in bulk, then when I want to make soap, I cut it into cubes and slowly melt it, which is also called rendering. Once the fat is melted, I put it in a muffin tin and then freeze it again. Once the fat is frozen, I put them in bags. When I feel the urge to make soap, I only take out what I need and remelt.
When the right amount of lye is added to the water, the mixture becomes very hot. So I always use mason jars. When the lye mixture is at the right temperature and my melted fat is at the right temperature, you add the lye mixture to the fat mixture and start stirring. It is not necessary to stir it quickly; it can be mixed by hand or by machine. This is the part that gets tricky. You need to keep stirring until the 3 products form a pudding consistency. Eventually you will notice a line left where you blend the mixture; this is called tracing, which also means that the 3 products have now mixed together and are no longer really one product, now soap.
When poured into special containers, the soap hardens and saponifies. If you wait about 2-3 weeks, you cut the bars, test them and voila, your own soap.
I could go into more detail but I won’t because again it’s very important that you buy a book that will teach you from A to Z how to make soap.
I couldn’t believe that 3 strong, different ingredients combined together would make a product that not only gently cleanses you; it also leaves your skin soft and hydrated. The other natural thing that happens during is not only the end result of the soap, it has now formed a new ingredient, glycerin. This is what gives your skin that moist feeling after using soap.
So try it yourself. I know soap is cheap in stores, but I also know that making products from scratch gives us a deeper connection with Mother Earth.
Thank you for your attention,
Good soap making.
