A Day on the Tranz Alpine Train

Considered one of the best train journeys in the world.

I was really looking forward to this trip as train travel has been a lifelong interest.

Managing to wake up early enough without disturbing his roommates, it was time to take the free shuttle to the train station. I had been lucky enough to get a special summer fare for the train, so the fare didn’t make huge inroads into the bank account!

Cool weather was the order of the day as we left Christchurch station. The train soon left the outskirts of the city and moved rapidly across the Canterbury Plains. Scattered pockets of cattle graze the flat, dry, brown bare paddocks with very little grass. We settled into comfortable seats with a small table between dishes and books.

The train staff’s comments were interesting and the touch of humor appreciated. The train began to climb through the hills and the scenery became considerably more interesting. Stunning views of the Waimakiriri River, ruined by inconsiderate people on this side of the train.

The Outdoor Observation Car has given the word new meaning for those brave enough to try and capture that special photo. The mist and rain started to set in and as we reached Arthur’s Pass the viewing had become increasingly limited.

The exceptional technical expertise in carrying out the railway line through the mountains with gradients of up to 1-33 degrees, the succession of short tunnels and the huge Otira tunnel of more than 8.5 kilometers were fascinating. This tunnel was one of the longest tunnels in the world when it was opened in the 1920s

Far too soon, the train reaches Greymouth, which is the end of the Tranzalpine journey. A one hour turn around time allowed those of us returning to Christchurch time to walk around the small town albeit in the rain! Time for a light meal in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the small town.

The return trip was very pleasant but the visibility of the passing landscape was greatly reduced due to the rain and mist.

The cafe on the train had delicious snacks and great customer service from the staff behind the counter. All passengers made good use of the coffee, bringing sweets back to their seats to enjoy, the coffee excellent!

The day was winding down as we approached Christchurch, already clad in its night lights and returning traffic.

Ordered before we left in the morning, the shuttles were waiting for us at the station ready to drop everyone off at their hotels or hostels.

An amazing day but one that I think would be really beautiful in the winter with snow on the ground and mountains.
