Barbados – A Hiking Vacation on the Island

It’s vacation planning time again, and you know for sure that you want to spend it quite differently than in the past. A different holiday because maybe the year so far has been trying and stressful with all the talk of job cuts, economic uncertainty and now even swine flu. Why not just take a hiking, backpacking holiday, and on to the peaceful tropical Caribbean island of Barbados. Get back to nature, interact with friendly people, refresh yourself with scenic walks, fresh air and the soothing sounds of the waves against the soft sandy beach.

A Barbados hiking holiday takes you on a journey revealing the uniqueness of Barbados and Barbadians, through four scenic, eye-opening and memorable hikes. The treks and accompanying stories show how Barbados came into being, seemingly from nothing in 1627, when the British settled and transformed a jungle that others rejected, into the jewel that she is today. Even the island’s geological formation is a unique story of something ‘out of nothing’. Many visitors to the island look forward to meeting local village figures and learning more about the exceptional Barbadians of yesteryear.

While hiking on a crisp sand beach on the brown sugar-colored east coast, one can explore the sandy shore and discover “coconuts of the sea”, “lucky seeds”, a stranded Portuguese man-of-war, to name just a few probable findings. Venturing inland, there are different walking surfaces, namely uphill grassy paths and rough sandy clay paths. We continue to climb to a height of 167 m (547 ft), to reach the very windy lookout, which offers a wide panoramic view of fifteen percent of the island.

Descending from this viewpoint along more rugged paths, which give way to paved roads, one enters a typical Barbadian village. A village of wooden houses, concrete houses, at least five small churches, in this small community, and of course not forgetting the rum shops, surprisingly only two serve this village. Visit a village resident who is an accomplished potter and a descendant of potters for 200 years.

These hills in the district of Scotland are a fusion of sandstone, clays and alluvial mud. This part of the island actually looks like another country compared to the other eighty-five percent of the land mass. In fact, geologists call this Scottish district Ancestral Barbados, and it is really material from another country, three hundred miles south of Barbados. From this seemingly unimportant material, Barbados formed, rising like a sphinx out of the Atlantic Ocean, just two million years ago.

Discover Manjak, its various uses by visiting what remains of this mine. Manjak is a type of hydrocarbon that was used as fuel in local train ovens, it was also exported for use as a main ingredient in the manufacture of black paint, as well as in the production of the oldest, but brittle , 33 1/3 vinyl records.

On a hiking holiday in Barbados, one can visit a national park, the site of the ruins of a large historic house and, through cart routes, a wildlife reserve. A standout highlight is a heritage site, a grand 355-year-old Jacobean-style plantation house full of history, tales of greed and murder to name a few. It is a working sugar plantation, with a fully renovated and functional 19th century steam mill used to extract the juice from the sugar cane. Last year, in 2008, this former plantation won an international award for its very fine rum, its outstanding stories continue.

In this area there are cozy country villages, a very picturesque lookout point that offers a majestic view of the district of Scotland. a two-hundred-year-old sugar windmill, which operates during the local sugar harvest season, effectively demonstrating how sugar cane juice was extracted using wind power. There is also an interesting goat herder, who is a popular columnist and a musician in a local music group, an outstanding personality in his own right.

There are downhill trails for those who don’t want to engage in steep terrain, as well as flat, rugged and scenic coastal trails. Barbados offers trails leading between sugar cane fields and into ravines (also called gullies) with rock formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns and cast stones.

A hiking holiday in tropical Barbados is rewarding in so many ways, healthy fresh air and exercise, with vitamin D from the sunshine, a welcome relaxing change of pace, as you discover new land and its inhabitants. Being in the natural environment is relaxing and has proven to be therapeutic for mind, soul and body. A healthy and rejuvenating way to spend a vacation.
