Harbour Island Bahamas – Best Kept Secret
Promise not to tell? One of the Bahamas’ best kept secrets is Harbor Island. This small romantic island, nicknamed “Briland” by its inhabitants, is a stone’s throw from the United States. A one-hour flight from Florida to North Eleuthera, followed by a quick taxi and water taxi ride, will quickly get you to this Bahamian gem.
Harbor Island is less than 4 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Its long, wide beach is famous for its compacted pale pink sand. The likes of Fodors and Conde Nast consider it one of the “Best Beaches in the Bahamas.” The beach, combined with great restaurants, hotels, and vacation home rentals, makes Harbor Island a top destination among Bahamian enthusiasts. It’s no surprise to find some “rich and famous” there – they know they won’t be hunted down.
In the center of Harbor Island is Dunmore Town. This quaint and friendly community features old Victorian structures adorned with Bahama’s colorful pastel paint schemes. No high rise hotels, fast food or traffic jams on this island!
Golf cart rentals are the transportation of choice. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and just plain walking on the beach are some of the popular activities. Of course, Harbor Island isn’t known for its shopping and nightlife, and there’s no gambling either. If you’re looking for big crowds, wild parties, or theme park rides, this isn’t your destination.
Harbor Island’s weather is delightful; especially in late winter and spring when there is little chance of rain. Ocean breezes mitigate moderately warm temperatures ranging from the 70s to 80s during the day and into the late 60s at night. Air conditioning during the season is not necessary – ceiling fans are adequate. Nothing beats falling asleep to the sound of the ocean through an open window.
Restaurant meals are casual. Top restaurants include Pink Sands Hotel, Coral Sands, The Landing, Rock House, Romora Bay Club, and Harbor Lounge. For local dishes, don’t miss Ma Ruby’s. And there’s more… Part of the fun of exploring the island is discovering the restaurants. Compared to the other islands in the Bahamas, Harbor Island has one of the best selections of restaurants – all close to wherever you stay.
On the ocean side, hotels include the Pink Sands Hotel, Coral Sands Hotel, and Dunmore Beach Club. Bay side is The Landing Inn and the Rock House. On a budget? There are other hotels to choose from. Visiting Harbor Island isn’t cheap, but if it were, everyone would be there, right?
Harbor Island vacation home rentals and villas are plentiful. Location and size come at a price. If you desire “beachfront”, the best locations are usually north and south along the east coast. If you want to save a little, there are some great rentals in Dunmore Town and others located inside the island. The beach is always minutes away.
Search the internet for home rentals that offer more than a few pictures so you know what to expect. A number of rentals are handled by rental agents or real estate agents who may not provide many details, descriptions, map locations or photos. Landlords who care about promoting their home rental usually have independent websites and take direct email inquiries.
The best home rentals on Harbor Island are booked nearly a year before peak season. Those who want the best make reservations in advance – many are repeat customers. You can also take a “pending” position on a number of rentals in the hope that someone will cancel. Ask for references and double check policies for deposits and refunds.
If you’re looking for a memorable, relaxed vacation in the Bahamas combined with sun, sea, great food, and a romantic waterfront that will make your eyes drool, consider Harbor Island. See you soon on the beach!
