Spookily Good Halloween Party Invitations

It’s time to get serious about preparing for the Halloween party. Halloween is right around the corner and you need to sort through your guest list and fill out those invites or you’ll be left alone. So how do you make the best impression on your friends and family to convince them that YOURS is the only party they should attend this year?

In our related articles on pirate and princess party invitations, we tried to make it clear that the party begins when you receive the invitation itself. This should convey excitement and really get your guest asking for their closest pen to respond with. Poorly thought out invites mean the rest of your group skills will follow the same pattern. And great invitations don’t have to be expensive in anything other than the imagination. Let’s look at some basic principles for Halloween invitations. The most important is the understanding of the general theme. If you chose Classic Hammer Film Horror as your theme, your invitations would be better suited to that than, say, witches on broomsticks.

Staying with this theme, you may have already thought of an invitation in the style of an old movie (cinema) ticket, or more colorful, like the old billboard posters. If you’re good on a computer, try it yourself using royalty-free or purchased artwork. If you’re not sure, take your ideas to your local printer and they’ll be able to translate them into the invitation or flat print (you fill in).

Another basic is to write what you want the invitation to say, this should include at a minimum; the name of the guest, the name of the party giver, the date, time and place and can also include the dress code and most importantly the theme of any dress code, if you want everyone disguised. You can include some costume suggestions, although you may want to do this on a separate sheet of paper. And why not discuss your theme with your costume supplier first so they can offer you a list of suggested costumes or help you choose your theme. They can also help you by keeping a list of “who ordered which costume” for you so you don’t get 30 people all dressed the same.

Back to the invitations, after establishing the theme and developing your list of key information, you need the basic invitation. If you have a steady hand, you can trace specific shapes onto art paper (construction paper), then cut them out, decorate them, or leave them in a simple silhouette, and use them. If you trace your design onto folded paper – keeping the fold (traditionally) to the left, when you cut out the design it will open into the invitation. If not, cut the fold line too! Good shapes for this are pumpkin, ghost, witch all of which can be decorated in a very stylized way.

For something more elegant why not use old brown colored paper with a creased and torn look, charred edges (responsible adults only) and made to look really aged. An alternative is to use white paper and make it look aged by staining it in a weak tea solution, then leaving a few (not too many) coffee granules to add darker stains – these will spread with the dampness of the paper. While still damp, use your thumb to gently flex the edges, pushing the fibers apart – you may need to try a few more times for the process to work properly. Once dry, crumble and tear as needed.

To really make them stand out, once you’ve finished your invitation, why not stretch some cobweb and tie it off. Don’t be tempted to use too much, it’s a case of less is more, you really just want a hint. To go further, you can drop a small spider (in keeping with the spider web) in the envelope.

And what are you going to use to write your invitation? Pen? As it’s Halloween why not go for the ultimate horror by using fake blood. Don’t make it too neat and don’t forget to leave some splashes around the invitation to make it look really authentic. One of the thicker blood gels may be better suited for this task.

If you have to mail your Halloween invitations, you’ll have to fold them up and put them in an envelope, but if you can avoid that, there are much more elaborate ways to present your Halloween invitation. For a little money you can buy plastic skeleton hands, either roll up your invitation and secure it in the hand so it “grabs” it or seal it between thumb and forefinger so it looks like your hand.

If you have chosen something like a grand vampire ball as your theme, you can roll up your invitations using red ribbon and seal them with sealing wax using a seal made from a small coin (an unusual foreign coin works best) or better yet or own a unique vampire. Clan marking.

Handing out these elegant invitations should give your party a spellbinding start and will be devilishly hard to beat because others won’t stand a chance. Have fun.
