How To Stop Bulimia Nervosa
At first, throwing up the large amounts of food eaten on a binge may seem like the key to staying lean, but in reality, the vast majority of sufferers want to stop bulimia and end this destructive condition. Induced vomiting is far from the ideal solution to weight gain. It masks deep discontent and leads to other psychological and physical problems.
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder and is nine times more likely to occur in women than in men. The onset is usually between 13 and 20 years old. Most bulimics induce vomiting to avoid weight gain, although some choose to exercise heavily or quickly to offset the calories.
Self-induced vomiting becomes an addiction that can become all-consuming because life is planned around eating and vomiting, over-exercising and fasting. It becomes a deeply unhealthy cycle of binging and purging leading to serious physical and mental health issues. Bulimics find themselves trapped in a bulimia/purge merry-go-round unable to escape and stop the bulimia.
The physical problems resulting from this condition are serious and include chronic gastric reflux, malnutrition, pancreatitis, ulcers, electrolyte imbalance leading to heart problems and seizures, reduced fertility and cessation of menstruation. Many suffer from dental erosion caused by frequent vomiting. Long-term use of diuretics, laxatives and enemas to purge the body also has health implications.
Psychologically, bulimics suffer from low self-esteem and feelings of guilt resulting from bulimia.
Although addicted to their condition, dominated by thoughts of food, and often deeply concerned about their health, sufferers are also eager to free themselves from it.
There are a variety of treatments. Drug therapy has not been consistently effective. The most common treatment is CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) where bulimics develop coping strategies such as recording the amount of food eaten and episodes of vomiting to highlight emotional ups and downs which cause a session of frenzy and purging. CBT has demonstrated its effectiveness.
However, many people have found a way out of this hopeless cycle through the healing benefits of hypnosis and NLP (neurolinguistic programming). This highly effective therapy has enabled sufferers to regain control of their lives and escape this torturous addiction by learning to eat like a happy, healthy person.
Hypnosis and NLP work by re-educating the mind. The myriad of benefits gained from using these techniques include controlling emotions, stopping the urge to vomit, learning helpful rather than destructive ways to think about food, and eating healthily and normally. Users of this treatment report how easy it is to change even after a session, either with a therapist or simply by listening to a powerful hypnosis recording. It plants the seeds of recovery in the minds of sufferers, helping them to stop bulimia and think in new and healthier ways, giving them the possibility of being free from this condition forever.
