The Differences Between Public Transport Travel Passes for Paris

If you’re planning to use Parisian public transport, be it the bus, metro, tram or RER, you can save big if you plan to make more than one trip. Unfortunately, there are many different options, so take a look at this quick guide before deciding which system is right for you.

Mobilis card

This ticket allows unlimited use of the metro, RER, tram or bus for 1 whole day, from 5:30 am. It is not valid for traveling to one of the airports by RER or bus. It can however be used on standard buses that visit airports if you purchase the correct zone (i.e. bus routes 183, 285, 350 or 351). You can buy a card in all metro ticket vending machines, in stations or in RATP stores. The price of the card depends on the tariff zone you intend to use.

Youth Weekend Ticket

This ticket allows unlimited use of the metro, RER, tram or bus for 1 whole day, from 5:30 am. However, it is only valid for people aged 25 and under and can only be used on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. It is not valid for traveling to one of the airports by RER or bus. It can however be used on standard buses that visit airports if you purchase the correct zone (i.e. bus routes 183, 285, 350 or 351). You can buy a ticket in all metro ticket vending machines, in stations or in RATP shops. The price of the card depends on the tariff zone you intend to use.

Paris Tour Card

The Paris Visite card is intended for tourists visiting Paris. These are available in formats for 1, 2, 3 or 5 consecutive days and also allow unlimited travel by bus, RER metro, trams and Transilien SNCF trains. In addition, you also benefit from free rides on the Montmartre funicular and the Orlyval and also allows access to Disneyland Paris or airports via the RER (if a zone 1-5 card is purchased). But the big advantage of this pass is that it allows you to benefit from a reduction on the price of admission to certain monuments, museums, visits and amusement parks (eg: 20% reduction on a day ticket at Disneyland Paris ). Make sure you want to see any of these attractions before deciding to buy this pass. There are 14 partners which can be found on the map provided with the map:

The price of the card depends on the chosen fare zone and there is also a discount for children (4-11 years). Tickets can be brought from metro stations, airports and some tourist offices.

Paris Pass

The Paris Pass is an all-in-one tourist and travel card for your visit to Paris. He includes in his package not only the Paris Visite card indicated above, but also a museum pass, an attractions pass, a bus tour pass, a topo-guide and many special offers in restaurants and shops in Paris. The Paris Pass is available in formats for 2, 4 or 6 consecutive days and there are discounts for Children (4-11 years old) and Teens (12-17 years old).

If you’re planning on doing a lot of attractions on the map, this might turn out to be good value for money. It can be purchased online before your trip to Paris.

Navigo Discovery Pass

The Navigo Découverte Pass is an electronic smart card accessible to everyone, passing through or residing in Paris, allowing unlimited travel by metro, bus, tram, RER or Transilien SNCF. It is valid for either a week (Monday to Sunday) or a month (from the 1st to the last day). The card, which costs €5, can be withdrawn at a station or metro ticket office. You will also need a standard photo ID. Once in possession of a card, you can reload it on a Pass Navigo machine present in all metro stations. Remember that if you start a weekly charge on a Wednesday, the card will still only be valid until Sunday evening when another weekly charge will be required. Likewise, if you start monthly billing in the middle of a month, it will still only be valid until the last day of the month. In a bus, metro, tram, etc., you have to swipe your card on the machine where standard tickets are stamped. For the metro, some barriers are Navigo passes only and will not take standard tickets.

Navigo pass

The Navigo pass is reserved for residents or people working in Paris or Ile-de-France. It is available free of charge in many RATP agencies as well as online. The same rules apply as for the Navigo Découverte Pass, with monthly or weekly reloading of the card available at ticket vending machines.

In addition to the option of a weekly or monthly rate, Navigo pass holders also have the option of an annual rate. This must be requested in a slightly different way, but can still be obtained by applying online or at several RATP counters in different stations. There is an administrative fee of €7.60 for setting up the card, but this includes the cost of a passport photo if applying in person. If you work for a company in Paris, it is customary for them to pay 50% of the cost of the annual rate.

There is also a Navigo Imagine R card for schoolchildren or students under 26. This card must be obtained from an RATP agency.
