10 Things You HAVE to See and Do When Visiting Israel

A little tricky, but here’s an attempt to narrow down Israel’s most popular attractions into a top ten “must do” list. The best of the Holy Land in one definitive checklist – these are the things you really should do, whether you’re here for a long weekend or a month.

In no particular order…

  • Float in the Dead Sea – The lowest point on earth is a special place to visit. If you want to relax and especially if you are feeling decadent, the Dead Sea is the ideal place to visit in Israel. Bring a newspaper to the photo session, smother that mineral-rich Dead Sea mud, then float on your back in the warm, salty sea. Just avoid diving!
  • Explore the Old City of Jerusalem – The old city of Jerusalem is a place really worth seeing, because there are important religious sites, such as the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque. You can easily spend a whole day here: pray between the cracks of the huge stones that make up the Western Wall, browse the stalls in the narrow streets of the Old Town Bazaar, and visit the site of Jesus’ crucifixion. This is probably your most important tourist day on your visit to Israel.
  • Have fun at Carmel Market in Tel Aviv – Located in the center of Tel Aviv, the Carmel Market gives you the opportunity to hone your negotiation skills and get a taste of the real Israel. Starting at the Allenby Street end, walk past many clothing stalls before hitting the heart of the market; food and spices. Amazing colors, wonderful smells… Listen to the stall sellers hawking their wares and mocking each other about space, prices, quality or sports teams. A great day out.
  • Snorkeling or diving in the Red Sea, Eilat – Eilat is the right place if you want to see a wonderful coral reef, beautiful fish and crystal clear water. Eilat is one of the best diving destinations in the world. With good weather almost all year round, this is the place to dust off your snorkel, discover snuba and renew or start your passion for diving. Alternatively, for the less adventurous, there is always Eilat’s impressive underwater observatory. Eilat has its own airport, so it’s easy to get there, and it’s only a short drive from the great diving in Sinai.
  • Visit Yad Vashem, Jerusalem – A more obvious place to visit, but an important place to visit for a deeper understanding of Israel, this is Israel’s memorial to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Located on the western outskirts of Jerusalem at Har HaZikaron, the large museum complex, open-air monuments, exhibition halls, large archives, libraries and other resource centers, covers more than 45 hectares. Take your time here and be prepared to be deeply moved.
  • Stand on the rim of Ramon Crater – An amazing geological feature in Israel’s mostly desert south, located about an hour south of Beersheba. The crater is 40 kilometers long and 2-10 kilometers wide, almost heart-shaped and naturally formed by water and climate erosion. The largest crater in the world, it sinks about 500 meters at its deepest point. Get a great view of the Ramon Crater at the Mitzpeh Ramon Visitor Center, where yes, you can stand on the edge of the world’s largest crater!
  • Enjoy the sunset on Tel Aviv beach – The wonderful sandy beaches of Tel Aviv are the perfect place to admire the sunset. Kick off your shoes with a beer, wine or whatever and feel the sand between your toes as the Mediterranean gently laps on the beach just a few meters (maybe even centimeters!) away. You can also end the day in one of the many beach cafes, the choice is yours.
  • Visit the mountain fortress of Masada – The mountain fortress of Masada stands on an isolated rocky plateau in southeastern Israel, overlooking the Dead Sea. The story of Masada is one of Jewish heroes, 1000 inhabitants who commit mass suicide rather than surrender to their Roman enemies. Walk the Serpentine Path to the top of Masada, if you’re feeling adventurous, otherwise take the cable car. An early morning or late afternoon visit is recommended due to the heat.
  • Admire the Bahá’í Garden in Haifa – Baha’i’s magical terraces in Haifa are possibly right off the main tourist track. But they really should be added to your Israeli guests. The Baha’i Gardens must be one of the most beautiful gardens in the world and are a memorial to the founders of the Baha’i Faith and attract pilgrims from around the world. Free entry, although you should dress modestly. The surrounding Haifa area is full of things to do and see, including museums, cafes and a large artist colony!
  • Spend the night in the city that never sleeps, Tel Aviv – The nightlife in Tel Aviv is legendary, you can find almost anything for a good night there. There are countless bars and clubs, as well as museums, theaters, galleries, dance centers and concert halls for a more cultural night out. If you have the energy, Tel Aviv can keep you busy until morning, including the many restaurants and cafes around the city. During the summer months, you can spend the evening in one of the many beach cafes and restaurants (oh yes, feel the sand between your toes).

Enjoy your stay in Israel!
