How I Overcame Procrastination

“Procrastination is the art of staying in yesterday.” – Don Marquis

Don Marquis definitely hit the nail on the head with that quote in my opinion. But that was a while ago when I was considered the king of procrastinators. I’m a changed guy now, but I’ll tell you what – read how I changed, and maybe it could help procrastinators around the world.

Before I start ranting about my lazy life, I first want to describe procrastination – procrastination is a way of doing something today that should have been done yesterday. Yes, simply put, procrastination is the art of putting off tasks. Now on to my story:

Once upon a time, three months ago to be precise, my routine went something like this – I would lie on the sofa sipping cups of coffee instead of participating in the daily rituals of my rest room; bunking practice, thinking I’ll catch it tomorrow; delaying writing reviews that required immediate attention; lounging on the couch and staying up late watching TV instead of falling asleep; pushing important tasks like filing tax returns to the last day and so on.

The consequences increased and my slips began to show – my colleagues lost respect for me because I was tired during work hours; my children began to treat me as part of the furniture; my friends started avoiding me because I hadn’t bothered to reach out to them for old times sake and every time I looked into my wife’s eyes I could read “form or send” loud and clear. The only guy who loved me was Bud, our dog, but that wasn’t good enough.

Procrastination turned a fun-loving person into a lazy dog and a lazy dog into a lazy pig. I had to do something to get over my procrastination and regain my confidence. I knew that my path to salvation lay in my decision of self-determination, but I needed help. I confided in my wife and bared my soul, and from there my journey of redemption began – my wife would now be my guide and mentor and she would help me shrug my shoulders.

Looking back, I realize that overcoming procrastination is not as difficult as it seems. Here are some of the steps I resorted to – and here’s how I did it:

1. First, I had to steel my mind. If I had to do it, I had to do it now. This became a song, and even though I was a slow starter, I immediately started doing important tasks and slowly got a hold of myself.

2. I started thinking positively. I threw away all the negative feelings I had harbored towards my boss, friends, colleagues and even my wife and painted everything with the colors of sunlight and my whole thought process changed for the better. The cobwebs cleared up in my mind and I started looking at people and things from a new perspective.

3. Thinking positively gradually pushed away all the self-destructive thoughts that previously lurked in my mind. “Can’t” turned into “can”, “can’t” turned into “does” and things started to change as I started getting initial positive feedback from my family members!

4. Little by little I started to plan tasks and I also started to enjoy the process! Okay, my wife was around to cheer me on, and my kids saw their dad in a new light, and that somehow gave me the strength to continue my anti-procrastination quest.

5. Okay, I’d be lying if I said the transformation was magical, because it wasn’t. At first, I had to break down important tasks into small doable chunks and then tackle them. But over time, I found myself able to master monstrous tasks in no time.

6. Well, I tried a little meditation and found that it had a calming effect on me. Trust me, the calming effect can give you the inner strength to do your work without anyone’s help or distraction.

This is the essence of how I decided to end my procrastination. Today the sun shines brightly for me as I show the respect of my colleagues and friends and the love of my family.

And now, if you’ll excuse me – I’m off to plan my budget for next month and help my lovely daughter with her school project work. I started my story with a quote and now I’ll end it with one:

“Some day is not a day of the week”. – Author unknown

Congratulations!
