A Lost Review – Season 6 Episode 16 – "What They Died For"
A week after the most divisive episode in the series’ history, I was very curious about the follow-up. For the record, I liked “Across the Sea” even though it was confusing at times. If nothing else, it was necessary for tonight’s episode. I was very happy to see Desmond again, even if it was only sideways. I really thought he was going to run Locke down again, so I was totally shocked when he got out of his car and beat Ben to death… just like old times! Ben even saw Desmond punch him at the marina in “Dead Is Dead”. But Desmond wasn’t done yet! She turned herself in to Sawyer, who put her in a jail cell with Sayid (very happy to see him again!) next to Kate. Desmond still wasn’t ready to round up the side losers as he made a deal with Ana Lucia who released them to Hurley as he transported them to the county lockup. I loved Hurley’s line where he asked if Ana Lucia was coming with them. His meeting with Libby had an even more profound effect than I had thought! It seems that the ultimate meeting for all the sidekicks is at a benefit concert for Miles’ dad’s museum.
At the same time, in the rest of the sideways world, Locke got religion. He became the man of faith we all know and love when Ben told him what Desmond said when he punched Dr. Linus. So Locke has decided that it really is time to fix his leg. Speaking of Ben, he got invited to dinner at his favorite student Alex’s house with his mother. Needless to say, it was nice to see Danielle again, especially dressed as a regular person as opposed to a crazy island hermit. After dinner, it almost felt like Ben and Danielle were having a love affair. I could be reading that wrong, but it sure felt like something to me. I have no idea yet what will happen when all the side characters come together in the finale, but quite a few of them are ready to meet, and I’m sure Desmond will pull the rest together in Sunday’s epic finale.
Back on the island, Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, and Kate were understandably devastated by the deaths of Sayid, Sun, and Jin, but Jack, a man of action, knew what to do. After stitching up Kate’s wound (mirroring Jack’s post-accident surgery in “Pilot”), Jack began leading the survivors to find Desmond. Sawyer stopped Jack along the way to ask about the submarine bomb. I really felt for Sawyer and his guilt and responsibility for the deaths of Sayid, Sun, and Jin. Jack actually stepped up and said some very comforting things to Sawyer and I liked Jack for doing that. Soon after, Hurley saw a boy, Jacob, and followed him to find a full-grown Jacob, who told him that the end was near and that he needed to see the survivors.
Meanwhile, Ben, Richard and Miles were still trying to get C4 to destroy the Ajira plane. However, Charles Widmore and Zoe ambushed them at Ben’s old Dharma house. Unfortunately for everyone, Locke wasn’t far behind. Widmore and Zoe hid, Miles ran and Ben and Richard tried to confront Locke. Suddenly, Richard is attacked by the Smoke Monster and he appears to be dead and gone. I’m not entirely sure if we’ve seen the last of him, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone for good considering how characters are dropping like flies now! If he’s gone, I’d have to say Richard, we hardly knew you. Please offer our condolences to Frank if you see him in the secondary characters’ afterlife.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just when I thought Ben had turned over a new leaf, he crosses Widmore and Zoe. After quickly dispatching Zoe, Locke offered to spare Penny’s life if Widmore would tell him how and why she returned to the island. I was surprised to hear that Jacob told Widmore to come back with Desmond. When Widmore told Locke about Desmond’s importance, Ben shot him. This is getting ridiculous! Ben asked Locke who else needed killing, which bothered me. But then again, he can pull a long trick on Locke. At least I hope he is!
Back at Jacob’s campfire, the remaining candidates questioned Jacob about his motives. Apparently Jacob brought them all to the island because they had lonely lives and needed the island as much as the island needed them. And Kate was delisted in the cave because she had Aaron and wasn’t alone anymore. But he was still a candidate and he could get the job if he wanted to. After last week, I really didn’t care for Jacob and even though he made some good points in his explanation, he still seemed pretty selfish. He said he let his surrogate choose because he never had a chance to decide if he wanted to be the island’s guardian. Of course, Jack stepped up to replace Jacob. It felt right, even though I haven’t always been on Team Jack. Jacob turned the water into wine or something for Jack to drink and told him where the heart of the island was. Jack drank and became like Jacob.
Eventually, Ben and Locke wandered over to the well where Desmond was supposed to be, but apparently in addition to not killing him, Sayid also left a rope for Desmond to escape. According to Locke, Desmond has failed in the event that all the candidates are killed. I have a feeling that Locke is going to throw Desmond into the light to turn him into a Smoke Monster, but his unique resistance to electromagnetism will backfire on Locke and likely destroy him.
