Outings With Young Children
It’s much easier to be a recluse when your kids are young and never go anywhere. If they are tired or sleepy you can put them to bed, if they are hungry you can feed them food they are used to and like and you can always find something they like.
However, life is such that we would be crazy if we never went out with small children. One of the challenges of being outdoors with a small child is that you are not in control of the environment. Restraining a two-year-old in the grocery store is a nightmare. Children seem to know when their parents are not in control of the environment. They also know that they will not be punished publicly. Young children are therefore more prone to be disobedient when away from home.
Another challenge of outdoor activities with small children is that outdoor activities sometimes overlap with their nighttime sleep or naps. Anyone who has not had to deal with a tired and sleepy child does not yet know what stress is! When a child is tired and sleepy, no substitute is ever good enough.
Children get used to a certain kind of food that they eat at home. Unless the children have had good food before leaving the house or the mother carries food with her, it is quite a challenge to get the child to eat at a restaurant or at a friend’s house. Because children don’t eat well when they go out, they get hungry quickly. It is recommended to carry their favorite snack if they were not fed before they left home.
Children get bored very easily and always think it’s their parents’ fault. When one goes out with young children, they should make sure that they have enough toys to keep the child occupied while they are away from home. Colored pencils and paper, picture books or stuffed toys should be carried, depending on the age of the child.
It’s common for kids who are potty trained at home to “lose it” when they go outside. The disturbance can make them forget to go to the toilet. Parents must prepare extra underwear or diapers.
Although playing outdoors with small children is a challenge, it is good for both the parents and the child. Young children’s minds are refreshed and challenged when they leave their homes and explore the outside world. Parents also need to get out of the house and take a break from what can become a mundane lifestyle.
