Tips For Losing Pregnancy Weight

Diaper bag…check, wipes…check, stroller…check, baby…check, extended belly and buffalo rear end??? check. 🙁

If you’ve had kids, unless you have a trainer and a chef, or otherwise a crazy high metabolism, you’ve probably experienced how difficult it can be to lose weight after pregnancy. Face it… your body just changes. It looks different, it hangs different, and you probably have fat in places you never knew existed.

Many women accept these changes as just part of life. Seriously, when you have a new baby, who really wants to focus on getting back in shape? You have this sweet little person to stare at and play with all day. Who wants to take their child’s time for training???

But does it really have to be? Do you really have to choose between the two? Do you really have to change everything in your life to finally get your body back?

I’m here to tell you that you CAN have both. Believe it or not, achieving your weight loss goals doesn’t require very many changes. The key is consistency; you can’t lose it overnight. And no matter what anyone says, including your OB, you should start your weight loss goals on your own schedule, not someone else’s.

Make sure you get your doctor’s approval before starting a weight loss program; 4-6 weeks after birth is a good rule of thumb.

Here are 7 tips that I personally used to lose over 50 pounds after my first pregnancy:

1) Drink water like it’s going out of style.

Seriously. Especially if you are breastfeeding. I’ve heard people overstate the importance of water by saying that you can overhydrate yourself, and while it IS theoretically possible, it’s MUCH more likely that you’re dehydrated. You basically have to work HARD to get over-hydrated for that to happen. Pregnancy takes a toll on your body, and your body can’t recover properly without enough water. Your body also can’t focus on losing weight during pregnancy without enough water. Water is needed to lose the water weight that has accumulated in your system. So remember to drink. Also try to drink plain old water if you can stomach it; It is better not to drink extra calories. Try to drink a tall glass of cold water first thing in the morning as soon as you wake up. I’m not sure if it’s just my imagination or not, but I’ve found that doing it speeds up your system and gets it ready to burn those calories.

2) Buy the Baby and Mom Yoga DVD…and use it! 🙂

I know it can be very difficult to have a lot of “me” time. And when I do have “me” time, the last thing I honestly want to do during it is exercise. I’d much rather read a good book or take a bubble bath. That’s why I absolutely love Mom and Baby Yoga DVDs. You can then exercise while spending quality time with your newborn. And baby loves to look at your face and get you on the floor with them too. It really is a win-win. Much better than waiting for the planets to align, you can run to the gym.

3) Breastfeed if humanly possible.

I’m shocked to hear how many doctors have told my friends, “Why are you breastfeeding, it’s just as healthy to breastfeed, just as good for your body and much easier” when the facts are true. does not support it at all. I wish doctors would at least tell women all the facts and then let them decide. If they still choose a formula, that’s their prerogative. But they should have all the facts first.

So what does breastfeeding have to do with it losing pregnancy weight? A lot. Not only does it have the best natural nutrients for your growing baby, but it also requires about 500 extra calories to produce milk. Breastfeeding also helps the uterus contract and shrink back to its original size more quickly, minimizing how long you look pregnant after giving birth. If that’s not enough motivation, consider this; The only vitamin “missing” from breast milk is vitamin D, the sunlight vitamin (because most moms are deficient, not because breast milk doesn’t contain enough). What’s a great reason to get out of the stroller and go for a walk in the park to make sure both you and baby get their fair share of sunlight? Best of all, because breastfeeding has been shown to boost your child’s immune system, you’ll spend less time dealing with ear infections and colds and more days driving your kids around and taking them outside to help melt away the fat.

As far as the formula is more convenient? I can’t speak for everyone, but I love the fact that there are no bottles to clean, no nipples to keep up with, no formula to mix, no run out of formula and no running to the store, no trash, no clean up and most of all hardly any spit up . Plus, once you get the hang of it, you can breastfeed practically anywhere and no one will be the wiser.

Ok, I guess I’ll stop rambling now… 🙂 It really helps move things along.

4) Walk!!!

Can’t say enough about the walk. It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Many people will tell you that getting back in shape requires working out 5 days a week at the bowflex or the gym. It’s just not true. Believe it or not, your body wants to return to its pre-pregnancy weight. So just moving around is enough to get things going. Make sure you start slowly. Every little bit helps. Try to take more stairs or park further away from the store. You can even walk around Ruokauppa before you start shopping or do rounds in your living room while your baby takes a nap. If you need an extra boost, why not carry your little one instead of using a stroller every now and then. Just one hour of carrying a 15-pound baby burns 246 calories for a 155-pound woman. It can be easily achieved if you break it down into a few extra minutes throughout the day.

5) Continue your labor.

Taking vitamins with help will give your body everything it needs to lose pregnancy weight. With the lack of sleep and time that comes with being a new mom, it’s easy to not get all the nutrients you need from your diet. Your body needs to know that it has all the vitamins it needs on a daily basis before it lets go of all the stores created during pregnancy. Taking vitamins every day will help make sure it works. Which vitamins especially help? Vitamin E, chromium picolinate and vitamin B complex are believed to aid in weight loss; so make sure the prenatal you choose contains these essential vitamins.

6) Eat more fiber and good fat.

You need fat to burn fat. Try adding more olive oil, nuts and fish to your diet. Avocados are your friend!!! They are probably one of the healthiest things you can put in your mouth! Adding good fat will help keep you fuller longer and help burn off all those fat stores you no longer need.

For fiber, use whole wheat flour instead of white and eat lots of asparagus, broccoli, spinach and other green leafy vegetables. Instead of using stool softeners and laxatives, remember to eat extra fruits as well. No, carbs won’t kill you. 🙂 Fruits are good for you!! Also, try buying ground flaxseed and adding it to yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, or even pancake mix. When you’re backed out and feeling bloated, you don’t want to exercise or move. So do your body a favor and get more fiber!

7) Get rid of all the artificial crap!!!!

Ditch the low-fat margarine, get rid of the low-calorie snack cakes and spit out the Diet Coke. Have you ever noticed that most of the people who eat all that stuff are overweight??? It’s much better to eat a little real butter than to slather on lots of low-calorie margarine, which is just hydrogenated oil. If you’re ever wondering what all goes into a margarine spread, here’s a list of the ingredients in Smart Balance Margarine:

NATURAL OIL MIXTURE (PALM, SOYBEAN, CANOLA AND OLIVE OILS), WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% SALT, WHEY (from MILK), VEGETABLE MONOGLYCERIDES AND SORBITAN ESTERS OF FATTY ACIDS, SORBITON ESTER LACTIC ACID (TO PRESERVE FRESH), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL COFFIN, CALCIUM DIsodium EDTA, A -VITAMIN, B6-VITAMIN, B12-, D-VITAMIN, E-VITAMIN (TOCOPHEROL ACETATE), BETA-CAROTENES.

What’s in butter?

Cream, salt and milk. I’ll take the butter, please. 🙂

By the same token…a little sugar is also not as bad as artificial sweeteners, which I believe actually cause cancer. When you have just given birth, your body needs as much natural food as possible. No chemicals. The same goes for diet cokes. I’ve even heard this supposed “health guru” tell a room full of people that he lost weight by drinking Diet Coke all day. The calories saved by drinking Diet Coke compared to regular Coke can help you lose a few pounds if you’re used to drinking a huge amount of soda, true. However, ingested chemicals will not improve your health in the slightest. If your goal is just to lose pregnancy weight, definitely drink Diet Coke. However, if you are aiming to be both thin and healthy so that you can run with your new bundle of joy and live a long healthy life, do yourself a favor and stop drinking all diet drinks. Fall in love with water, natural tea or even smoothies made with honey. Your body will thank you later.

It can be quite difficult to shed extra pregnancy pounds. Hopefully, these few tips will help you reach your own weight loss and fitness goals. Just remember to start slow and focus more on just some form of exercise at least 30 minutes a day, not Iron Man training. Drink plenty of water and remember to eat fats, fiber, vegetables and fruits, especially avocados. Good luck on your journey and here’s the pregnancy weight loss once and for all!
