Liver Cleansing Herbal Teas

The coming of spring brings joy to us all. New flowers and leaves appear, the world seems to wake up and rejuvenate itself, and humanity shakes itself and finds joy in all hearts. Well, not really. But close!

For me, spring is also a time to get rid of the body’s legacy of toxins that heavy winter food has helped to accumulate. The time for liver cleansing is at hand. The new season is approaching and rejuvenation begins in the liver. You know the old saying, “Is life worth living? Well, it depends on the liver.” After all, emotions and energy are largely chemical and glandular, so let’s give the liver an oil change for the new season.

These simple teas will surely give you a boost, but CHECK WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL FIRST. My friend is sick with licorice; My nephew is at risk of death if he has peanut products. (He’s a six foot four inch farmer who can work all day in the hot sun.) So be careful.

Try any of these combinations to cleanse your tired liver:

Combination 1:

Yellow dock root, dandelion root, licorice root, red sage, sarsaparilla, hyssop, Pau de Arco (ipe roxo), milk thistle seed, parsley leaf.

Combination 2:

Fennel seed, fenugreek, linseed, peppermint, licorice root, burdock.

(Mix in equal parts except licorice root and burdock. Just add a pinch of these 2.)

Combination 3:

Scratweed (a.k.a. goosegrass, choppers), dandelion, dandelion, parsley root, nettle, Oregon grape root, burdock root, butternut shell, peppermint, red clover, fennel, licorice.

You can add a teaspoon of milk thistle seed extract to all of the above as an extra boost for the liver. A friend of mine jokes that his liver is so healthy now that they have to take it to death after he dies.

You can make most of these teas yourself, or perhaps pick up a ready-made tea at your local health store. What I do is buy 1/2 or 1 ounce of each herb. Then I combine one full tablespoon of each herb in a mason jar. Shake it and it’s ready to go.

Benefits from the individual herbs and medicines listed:

  • Fennel seed – white blood cell formation, acid/base balance
  • Red clover – blood purifier
  • Licorice – stimulation of the adrenal gland
  • Hakkarit – anti-infection
  • Oregon grape root – cleaning, construction
  • Nettle – rich in minerals
  • Dandelion – cleanses and strengthens ·
  • Fenugreek – helps remove toxins and mucus
  • Yellow dock root – cleansing, white blood cell formation
  • Burdock root – cleansing
  • Pau de Arco – cleansing, white blood cell formation
  • Peppermint – body cleanser and facial lotion
  • Milk thistle seeds – cleaning, construction

To make tea:

Boil 1 1/4 cups of filtered water in a sterile container. Add 1 dipped tablespoon of selected herb mixture. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink sufficiently cooled.

Take a cup before breakfast and a cup before dinner for up to 2 months.
