The Last Chance for Gold

I grew up in my corner of Florida, and there was an old gas station on the edge of the Everglades. The owner did a lot of business with an oversized, hand-painted warning sign:

Last chance for gas.

Beyond the fuel pumps was a thin two-lane strip of asphalt and 90 miles of swampy wilderness. No smartphones. No “emergency call boxes”. And most places along the highway don’t have guardrails either.

You were on your own – just like the financial wilderness we all have to navigate today.

That’s why the steep drop in gold prices and mining stocks is like a warning sign… and a gift of money…

In short, if you waited on the sidelines after this year’s monster rally, this is your second chance – and I think your last chance – to buy gold at these prices. And it comes at just the right time.

Typical gold

Gold has made a complete round-trip in buyer sentiment over the past 12 months, from the world’s “angriest commodity” at lows near $1,050 an ounce 12 months ago to “must buy it” status at $1,350 an ounce this summer.

Now that gold has fallen from those lofty heights, an investor is more likely to ask, “Honey, what have you done for me lately?”

Overall, gold has given back about 60 percent of its 2017 rally. Still, sharp declines like this, followed by a retracement of the broader trend higher, are typical early market moves for this volatile metal. The most famous of these pullbacks was gold’s rise to all-time highs in the 1970s.

Starting at $35 an ounce in the early 1970s, when gold became legal for American ownership again, the bullion rose to nearly $190 an ounce in 1975. That’s quite a run in itself. Over the next 18 months, the price of gold fell back nearly 60% to $100 before rising to a then-record high of $800 an ounce over the next three and a half years.

The song remains the same

Most importantly, when it comes to the companies that dig this stuff out of the ground… nothing has changed.

As I’ve pointed out in recent months, gold mining companies have done a great job of getting costs down and making money to boot.

Back in February, we noted that the elite companies in this group were making an average of $215 for every ounce of gold they dug out of the ground, and we said plainly to anyone who would listen, “Stop panic selling. gold mining stocks.”

Likewise, when dividends were cut in 2014 and 2015 as the price of gold collapsed, many of the same companies have not only returned payouts, but have started raising them again. In the meantime, mining companies have removed much of their old cost structures. This is why Newmont Mining, as an example, has been able to drop its “AISC” or all-in maintenance costs – from $1,170 in 2012 to $910 in 2016.

The thing is, there are many reasons to own gold: for speculative gains, as discussed above; for insurance purposes; and to preserve wealth. But you can’t benefit from any of these strategies without taking advantage of the gift of low gold prices and low expectations that Wall Street’s hair-trigger traders have placed on our table.
