Sleep Routines For Babies, Start Early to Avoid Sleep Problems
You have a lovely new baby and you bring him home from the hospital. There are many sleep routines for babies that you can try, but keep your baby close to you because that’s what new moms do. He sleeps with you in the bedroom in a crib or bassinet that is close by and easy to feed at night. But when it comes time for him to move into his own bedroom, the problems begin!
When the baby is used to his environment and it is a normal daily routine, it can be problematic to start leaving him in a new and unfamiliar place. His nursery may be quite warm and cosy, but if he is used to being with you in a bright and busy room, the sudden change may prove disconcerting, and as a result, the baby will cry more often for your attention. All this can be avoided by starting the baby in his nursery from the first day. Use a baby monitor at night so that when he wakes up to eat, you can go to him quickly.
If you find that your baby can’t sleep alone in his nursery, you can put him in his bed in the nursery and try sitting near the crib for a few nights until he falls asleep. Then gradually move the chair further from the bed towards the door for another week or so. Finally, place a chair next to the door so that the baby gets used to falling asleep without being right next to you. Your presence in the room should be enough to calm him down.

The sound of your voice is the most important thing for him to feel safe enough to fall asleep. By starting these simple routines early, you’ll hopefully avoid problems later trying to transition your baby to the nursery and help your baby sleep through the night without too much fuss.
