Common Causes of Infant Constipation
It is quite normal for newborn babies to have bowel movements several times a day or just once a week. In some cases, although this is usually rare, there can be up to three weeks between a child’s bowel movements. A baby should only be treated with laxatives if he has long intervals between bowel movements and you should consult a specialist. Breastfed babies usually have frequent stools until they are 2-3 months old, and their stools are typically yellowish. Breastfed babies’ bowels usually open with each feeding, and the bowels can open up to 6 times a day. Bottle-fed babies, on the other hand, may only poop once a day or even once every two or three days.
Constipation can be a common cause of colic in infants, and there can be various variations in the frequency of bowel movements. Any child who does not pass stools as often as every other day, or who passes very hard stools, is usually considered constipated. Constipation can occur in a newborn, baby, toddler or even a child of any age. Baby constipation is a common condition, but it is rarely caused by medical problems that require some form of medical intervention. During the newborn period (first 28 days), constipation is rare in breast-fed babies and is most likely to occur in bottle-fed babies.
A large part of constipation that occurs from the age of one is mostly due to a willful reluctance to go to the toilet. In older babies this may be because they are too involved in the activity to want to obey the need to go to the toilet, but in younger babies this is usually related to potty training. Regardless of the causes, constipation in children needs to be recognized and needs attention. Unresolved constipation in babies leads to stools piling up in the child’s rectum, which can lead to bloating and abdominal pain. Prolonged constipation also makes babies more susceptible to urinary tract infections.
The following are both medical and non-medical causes of constipation in babies:
- Transitioning from breast milk to bottle feeding or solid meals
- Not drinking enough water or fluids – this is one of the most common causes in older babies
- Low-fiber diet for children eating solids
- Some medicines, such as cough medicines, can cause constipation in children
- Potty training anxiety – especially common in toddlers and older children. Parents should be careful not to be harsh with potty training and encouraging
- Absence or blockage of the anus from birth (anal stenosis)
- Hirschsprung’s disease – a condition from birth in which a child has a nerve cell defect that affects communication between the brain and the gut
- Diabetes
- Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis are commonly associated with constipation in babies
- Low thyroid function
- Lead poisoning, although it is generally quite rare in developing countries
