Team Building – 5 Easy Ways to Brand Your Business Team Building Efforts

Team Building efforts are sometimes not enough to get the team to the winning table. But you don’t have to carry the losing flag if you understand how to recognize your team’s brand and take the win.

Several years ago I decided to sponsor a local minor league baseball team as part of our local promotions. The process cost $150 and 20 small t-shirts with my logo printed on the front of the shirt – the last name of each team member on the back.

The traditional team colors were all taken, but I found a selection of bright orange T-shirts that weren’t taken and our logo looked good on the front of the shirt. The blue and white logo stamped on the front actually stood out well against the Orange T. Orange was the local high school color and I was proud to wear it even though it wasn’t my best color. I just layered it over a black turtleneck and still wore it. Nowhere in my personal history had I thought orange was a BAD color. Remember, we were in COLORADO and Broncos are popular here.

One little girl with big blue eyes walked up to the table when I was handing out orange T-shirts and said, “I can’t wear orange.”

I replied, “Sure you can, honey. It looks lovely on you.”

He said (much louder), “I have red hair and my dad is a Green Bay Packers fan. I can’t wear orange.”

That little girl didn’t play on my team anymore. No matter what I said to him from that point forward, nothing I said would change his mind and make him play for the orange team. He had to find a different place to play – where they offered GREEN T-shirts. Directly across from my table was a local undertaker’s table, and I noticed that his T-shirts were green. I took her hand and walked across the hall to her desk. We shuffled the roster and he had a new redhead on his team wearing a green t-shirt. I brought back a little Bronco Fan to wear my orange JV Enterprizes shirt with the blue and white logo on the front.

That little story taught me a lesson. A couple of them really, but one important lesson keeps coming back to me over and over again.

Little red-headed girls don’t wear orange.

Is this a branding technique? Yeah. Is this a branding technique we can use in our businesses online? Yeah. Is this a branding technique we can implement? Yeah.

There are important concepts that just can’t stand to change when we’re branding our team building work in a small business. These are important concepts that we need to accept and acknowledge in order to make better use of working concepts.

1 – Make sure your team members play on YOUR team.

You can’t force loyalty. That little red headed girl would NEVER have been on the orange team. His heart wasn’t in it. When building your team, let all the red headed girls who don’t want to play move to another team. Loyalty comes voluntarily, not by force.

2 – Choose a REAL brand that fits all team members.

This is not about switching brands. The most obvious brand is the one you represent best. If you work in an urban business and every team member has to wear a cowboy hat and buckets, not only is their uniform a concern, but it won’t sell. Choose your REAL brand.

3 – Use the Goose Leader principle with your team.

When geese fly south, they form a huge V to break the wind. As the leader tires, the next goose slides into point formation, and then the next. Use the same principle with your team and encourage all participants to lead their own expertise. Your team becomes stronger with better leadership.

4 – Know your team’s destination and make a plan.

Back to the geese, they know where they are going and they know how to get there. They follow the lead geese. Young geese follow old geese, old geese know the way and when they head south to winter – point V south.

5 – Maintain motivation as you move forward with teamwork.

When everyone is on board, wearing the same t-shirt, walking the same path and dedicated to the team’s purpose, motivation becomes a unified effort. A little red-haired girl would have thrown a monkey wrench into the program… Without her, the team can be positive, uplifting and motivated to win because they all support the same goal.

NB: I have nothing against little red headed girls. I love that little red headed girl. He is a precious teenager now and I adore him. Last I knew, she still doesn’t wear orange.

Join a team of online marketers working towards the same goal – online success.
