Beach to Battleship Race Recap Part 7: Recovery
One of the most important facets to any race or workout for that matter is recovery. The recovery is important for taking care of any issues on the day of the race or the workout, but also so you can continue to work out or feel normal the next day. I knew that the recovery from the Ironman would be difficult, but I had developed a plan to help me get through the recovery in the best way possible.
In previous half ironman races, I would finish the race do a little bit of recovery and beside some mile soreness, I was fine the next day. I realized at the end of the race that I had indeed pushed my body farther than I had ever done previously. I knew that I would have some big time recovery to deal with. I began that recovery immediately after finishing the race. I had packed a bag for my wife to bring me that contained a mixed bottle of Accelerade, two ibuprofen, and my compression socks. I forgot to put the compression socks on immediately, but I did swallow the Accelerade and ibuprofen. I did take some time with the Accelerate because I was still grossed out from all of the nutrition I had taken over the last several hours.
I received a massage at the end of the race which I think helped to at least send me on the way to recovery, even though I was numb from all of the hours of work. I then walked around quite a bit with my family. My feet were tired and sore, but I wanted to keep moving for some reason to avoid any cramping or soreness creeping in. We made our way to the results tent, then back to the convention center to get my bags. I never found my bike special needs or run special needs, but all I lost was a pair of socks and a CO2 cartridge along with a spare tire tube. By the time I retrieved my bike from the transition area, I could feel my back tightening up along with my calves and hamstrings. I stopped and did some mild stretching which certainly helped to loosen up some of the issues there.
We made it to the van and I got my bike out in the back. My wife drove and we headed to the hotel which was about a 15-20 minute drive. My mind was whirling around with all my thoughts of the day, but my body was indeed tired. By the time we reached the hotel, I was tightening up all over my body. The ibuprofen had definitely helped some of the swelling, but I was walking like a stiff 80 year old man. We made it inside and I took a shower. It felt good to be in warm water and to get all of the grime off of me. Up to this point, I had not felt like eating anything, but I started to get real hungry. We got dressed and headed over to Chili’s. I ate a moderate amount for me, but my taste buds were certainly not normal. I wore my compression socks all the way through dinner and until I got to bed that night.
We went back to the hotel and I crashed in the bed. I had a very difficult time sleeping that night as my whole body. In hindsight I should have taken a couple of sleeping pills before bed to help me sleep. I slept on and off through the night.
The next morning we woke up. My kids begged me to go to the hot tub and pool. Even though, I was really sore and couldn’t walk very good, I figured the war water of the hot tub would help and it sure did. I enjoyed the warm water and I stretched while in the water especially my hamstrings and calves. By this time, I felt pretty good and was ready to drive the 7 hours home. I should have run about 2-3 miles, but I chose not to. The weather had turned cold. I did walk on the treadmill for a little bit which seemed to help.
We got all of our stuff together and headed out for the drive home. The only thing that really bothered me was my lower back and the bottom of my feet. I am usually a second day sore person, meaning that I am much more sore the second day than the first. I indeed hit a wall of soreness on day two. I think the run on day 1 of recovery would have really helped, but I did not do it.
Overall, my recovery was good. I was sore the rest of the week, and chose to truly take the week off as I was not racing the rest of the year. By Wednesday of the week after, I felt human again and pretty much all my soreness was gone. Next year, I plan to run a couple of miles the day after the race and then run a couple of more days during the week after. I think this mild running will work out some of the soreness and be more like a regular hard workout day.
