Character Education That Excites Young Children!

Character education in many elementary schools bores children. It affects them the way Freshman History affected my college friends and me. We swore that no one could make history more boring than our professor did. In special situations, however, the professor changed gears. He used a teaching method that instantly became insanely exciting. The same method can transform character education into a topic that excites young children. In fact, character education teachers can make young children beg for more by regularly using a method our college professor saved for special occasions.

Teachers can easily turn today’s blah into tomorrow’s bling.

Today’s blah

Character education lesson plans often start with the usual, blah teaching method of a college history professor.

The teacher is talking. In this case, the teacher is talking about character education. Teachers grab free character education lesson plans from anywhere and follow the instructions found on the Internet:

· Talk about what respect sounds like.

· Discuss with students what respect looks like.

· Talk about respectful expressions

· Speak to them in a respectful tone of voice.

· Discuss respectful body language with students.

Character education teachers talk, talk and talk. When they speak, young children respond, as we regularly did in college history class. They take boring poses, wishing the topic didn’t exist.

Most young children, like many college freshmen, have not yet developed the skills needed to learn using the speaker-teacher method. They didn’t learn to walk by letting mom talk to them about what walking looks like. They didn’t learn to speak by asking dad to explain what speaking sounds like. Even talking didn’t bother them. Still, character education lesson plans urge the teacher to talk – and talk – and talk.

“Once you’ve explained,” continue the character education lesson plans as above, “discuss respect with your students.”

The teacher is discussing. Our university professor also tried it. After discussing history, he tried to engage us in the conversation. Many of us who awoke from talking-induced cat-naps were neither ready nor able to participate in the conversation.

Children aged three to eight are no longer ready to discuss character education after the teacher’s speech. Did they learn to walk, talk and feed themselves by discussing it with their parents? No. Nevertheless, character education lesson plans urge the teacher to talk – and talk – and talk.

Such an approach is boring for people of all ages. It’s blah, and no one enjoys blah character training.

Tomorrow’s Bling

Character education lesson plans can be changed overnight if teachers want. If you are a character education teacher and you really care about your students, you can make this change happen. How?

Introduce our history professor’s “special occasion” method and blah turns to bling. History catches the light, sparkles and becomes desirable.

What method can bring about such a change? What secret weapon made history exciting on special occasions?

· Did he show the video? No. He could have, but history videos can be as boring as history lectures.

· Did he ask us to act out historical moments? No. We were tired of historical figures as he had presented them, and we would have had no heart for role-playing games.

Our university professor used a storybook.

Imagine that. Our history professor read from a storybook on special occasions. He didn’t reach for just any book and try to glean history from it. He used a book that was deliberately written to convey accurate history in an easily digestible format. The book was Ambrosia for students who found history a dull, lifeless subject. We loved stories like the one about Columbus that started this way.

“On September 9, 1492, when the last land fell below the horizon, Christopher Columbus began to keep two logs. The second log, which he kept in secret, was a true estimate of his course and distance. The other was a fake account of the ship’s position. The place was written so that the crew wouldn’t be scared sailing so far from land.” Source: Samuel E. Morison, Christopher Columbus (Boston: Mentor, 1955), p. 36.

We were excited about history when it was packaged in story form – and character education excites young children when it is packaged in purposefully written stories.

Tried and true technology

Stories have long been considered a proven technique for presenting information. The technology has proven to be particularly good and desirable for use by young children. Stories help them learn – and remember – valuable information.

Visit a famous internet bookseller, type in the word “pot” and what do you find? You can find dozens of books that use stories to teach young children how to use the toilet and change diapers. Search for books on “brushing your teeth” and you’ll get similar results. Type “swimming” and a little duck named Stewie will teach them about water safety.

Stories written specifically to teach a specific subject (written for a purpose) use a method that has been used since ancient times – because it works!

Conclusion

Character education that inspires young children is based on books. Books allow children to filter stories through their own imaginations and identify with the characters while learning high moral values. Books make character education more desirable and memorable than any other tool used by a teacher.
