The Truth About Youth Hostels

In August 1909, the German teacher Richard Schirrmann had been caught in a violent thunderstorm during an eight-day migration journey with his students and found accommodation in a barn by a farmer.

While the students slept, Schirrmann lay awake all night.

The thought suddenly struck me: “We should create places where young people and students who are happy to be active can have a safe and affordable overnight stay”.

He first published this idea in 1910 in the essay “Voksschuelerherbergen” (“Elementary School Pupil Accommodation”),

“…also the boys and girls of the common man have to practice fresh, cheerful movement as a counterweight to the time spent on stools in their school years…how can I now imagine suitable and adequate accommodation for a huge army of primary school children?…every city and almost every village has a primary school that almost waits to be empty during the holidays for premises, for sleeping and changing into a dining room for happy children moving around. Two classrooms are enough, one for boys, one for girls. The benches are placed partially on top of each other. This gives free space for 15 beds … each camp consists of a bag and pillow tightly stuffed with straw, 2 sheets and a blanket .. . every child is stopped to bring their camp site back nice and tidy… “

After the publication of this essay in the “Koelnische Zeitung” (Cologne newspaper), numerous gifts of money and gifts in kind and offers of support came from all over Germany.

In 1912, the first camping lodge was opened in Altenia Castle in Germany

The first camping cabin was arranged according to Schirrmann’s plans: 2 bedrooms with 3-story solid wood beds, living room, kitchen, washrooms and shower rooms. The first warden of the hostel was Richard Schirrmann. He lived directly above the hostel rooms. In the same year, Schirrmann also published the first list of hostels with around 140 addresses.

However, many of these accommodations did not even have the basics of accommodation, e.g. there was nothing for the girls.

In 1913, there were already 301 camping lodges in towns and villages. A year later, one was already 535.

In 1920, the first publication of the “youth lodge” magazine was published, and the first handbook containing the addresses of camping lodges was published with approximately 700 addresses.

In the years 1924-1929, the first lottery for youth hostels collected 1.5 million royalties. In 1932, there were already 2123 camping lodges in Germany. More than 4.5 million overnight stays were made. But at the end of the 20th century, more than 600 camping lodges were already opened in other countries, such as Poland, Holland, France, England and Switzerland.

On October 20, 1932, the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) was founded in Amsterdam in the presence of the country offices of Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, France and Belgium.

The headquarters of the union is today in Welwyn Garden City near London. Richard Schirrmann was elected president. The language of the conference was German.

The next conference in 1933 was also attended by Isabel and Monroe Smith from the United States. In one year, they could open thirty camping lodges in the United States. Also in 1933, the National Socialists came to power in Germany.

All political and religious youth associations were disbanded and replaced by a compulsory university formed youth organization system along the lines of “youth kingdom guidance”. Richard Schirrmann has to step down as chairman of the German camping lodge factory.

He allowed himself to be influenced by the idealistic elements of the new movement and became honorary president of the German Camping Lodge Association. A decision he would later bitterly regret.

In 1936, it had to part ways with the International Camping Lodge Association for political reasons. After the end of the World War in 1947, 247 camping lodges were counted again in Germany, with 1,158,500 overnight stays.

In the years 1949-1990, an extensive network of camping lodges was also developed in the GDR. At first they were still run by unions, but later they became state-run youth institutions. Existing unions were dissolved. In 1960, there were the most camping lodges in the Federal Republic. More than 720 houses realized 11,300,312 overnight stays.

In 1990, after the end of the GDR, camping lodge associations were also established in the new countries of the Federal Republic. In November, these associations joined the German camping lodge association.

Campsites today

There are more than 4,000 camping lodges in 65 countries in the world, of which more than 600 are in Germany alone.

Camping lodges in Germany offer their guests much more than an affordable overnight stay. In addition to the experience of small cozy old buildings or castles and apartments, you will also find many houses in lovely natural surroundings as well as in big cities.
