How Big is the Love of God?
“God’s love is so great, almost no one can explain it,” says Jamie, 8. “It’s bigger than 999,999,999 gallons of chocolate milk. No one knows how great his love is, but all I know is that he doesn’t love us . no matter what.”
We are so used to conditional love that it is hard to even imagine a God who loves us unconditionally. Human love often awakens attractive or beautiful qualities in people. But what about loving people who reject, despise or even hate us? It’s a different kind of love.
“The love of God is greater than the love of men, the love of dogs, and the love of all,” says Catherine, 8.
In writing this column, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern of kids wanting their dogs in heaven. These amazing animals seemed to be equipped with a button of unconditional love for their master. No matter how many times you come home, your dog is always excited. On a good day, your cat might wake up, meow, and go back to sleep.
In fairness to cat lovers, I have a friend who learned a lesson in faith from her cat. This white ball of fluff knows he is in a helpless state on his own. Although this clawless cat has a Persian pedigree, he waits for his owner in everything. It would be good for us to abandon imagined self-sufficiency and expect God to take care of us.
“Sometimes I call my sister a bad name. When I get in trouble, God helps me stop crying,” says Spencer, age unknown.
Yes, God’s love is greater than the pain of our failure and sin. Emotional pain can drive us to either bitterness and hardness of heart or healing and a restored connection with God. Evil causes us to focus on our failure to the exclusion of God’s forgiveness. The reality of God’s love must be greater than the failures of the past.
Maybe you’re married to someone who has an elephantine memory of your past failures. If so, I recommend a bulldog faith that is forgiven of sin through the cross of Jesus and refuses to let go. Choose to live in the light of God’s acceptance of you as his beloved child instead of the guilt and condemnation of your past failures.
Until God’s love affects how we treat ourselves and others, it has little effect on the way we live. The apostle John wrote, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Jesus offers salvation from the punishment of sin, the power of sin, and the presence of sin.
When Christians confess their sins to God, they experience forgiveness and release from the power of sin in their lives. The punishment of sin of being separated from God forever cannot touch those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus as Savior. Confession to God allows us to agree with God about sin and experience God’s love again as we walk in the light of his will.
If you have a relationship with elephant memory, remember yourself, Kasey, 8, says, “God’s love never ends. It’s bigger than a hundred trillion billion elephants! If I compare God’s love to anything, God’s love would be bigger.”
The same apostle John wrote: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment” (1 John 4:18). When we are filled with God’s love, there is no room for fear, anger, bitterness, envy, or any past failures that plague us. God’s love displaces fear and other sins, and it also changes our outlook on life by neutralizing the guilt of past failures. Let the greatness of God’s love fill you with the abundant life that God wishes for you.
